GIST is a proud creator of future science and technology. In the QS World University Rankings announced in September 2016, GIST was No. 2 in the world in citations per faculty, an important index for evaluating a school’s research performance. We have built our current reputation by reaching beyond the borders of Korea and competing on the global scale, and our goal is to develop GIST into a truly international university where everyone communicates freely and cooperates actively with one another. Studying abroad entails having to adapt to a new culture and a new environment. At GIST we try to give our international students the respect and support they need to face these challenges. All classes at GIST are conducted in English, and over one-tenth of the current graduate students are international students. We will be there to advise and guide you so that you may successfully complete your tasks.
Our acronym, GIST, not only stands for Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, but GIST can also communicate our values. GIST aims to take the lead in technological advancement through scientific research, and innovative thinking in accordance with global standards. The red color of the first pillar stands for 'dynamic, passion, strength, and progressive spirit'. The gray color of other pillars stands for 'self-control'. The red color serves as a reminder of the color of all GIST buildings, especially that GIST is the representative scientific and technological educational institution in Gwangju.

In the QS World University Rankings 2015 - 2016, GIST was ranked No. 2 in the world in the category of citations per faculty. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014 - 2015, where GIST was included for evaluation for the first time, it was placed at No. 4 in Korea and at No. 96 in the world in the subject of Engineering and Technology. This clearly shows that GIST can compete with any institution of higher learning around the world in terms of academic and research achievements. Here at GIST, we are also trying hard to make tangible contributions to local, national, and global development. Through technology transfer and commercialization, our research results should lead to creating new industries and jobs, and ultimately to improving our quality of life. To realize that goal, we are actively promoting student and faculty startups so that they may blaze new trails with a fearless pioneering spirit.

It can be said to be the highest institution in nurturing science and technology talent, rivaling KAIST. It was established and operated as a graduate school program producing master's and doctoral degrees, but local public opinion has grown stronger to wish for the establishment of a department to prevent the outflow of local talent, and now, after graduating from high school, students can enroll in the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and proceed with bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs without interruption.

Very good university in terms of facilities, accommodation and research standards. It may take some time for international students to get used to with the language difference as most of the staff and local people speak only korean. Better learn the language to survive. I recommend this university.
