Founded to address the need of Pennsylvania’s Capital Region for increased educational opportunities in applied science and technology-related fields, the vision of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is to provide academic programs at undergraduate and graduate levels for a diversity of learners, using student-centered, technologically advanced, and experiential learning designs that emphasize student success, with a sharp focus on specific interdisciplinary competencies and strong linkages to career development. While other colleges are raising costs, we’re holding firm, keeping HU one of the lowest private university tuitions in the entire state. But offering an affordable price is only part of what Harrisburg University does to make attending college here financially attractive.

A full 100%of our undergraduate student body receives financial aid. We offer merit scholarships up to full tuition; merit and need-based grants up to full tuition; privately funded scholarships; low interest federal loans; and work-study opportunities that allow you to earn money while you go to college.

The goal of learning at Harrisburg University is to obtain the relevant knowledge, competence, and experiences to best be prepared for an enriching career. Learning is, therefore, a multi-faceted activity that occurs throughout and across the college experience; it integrates both academic learning (acquiring and applying new knowledge) and student development (learning about oneself). Competency-based learning outcomes with programs that are intentionally designed to be engaging, integrative, and experiential are emphasized.

Harrisburg University’s model for the assessment of student learning is structured to support learning goals. The goals of the programs and courses are clearly defined and are relevant to the mission of the University. Course syllabi establish specific learning objectives, articulate the instructor’s expectation of the student, and outline the standards against which the student’s learning will be measured. Learning assessment of coursework and experiential learning is creative, in that it goes beyond instructor-driven evaluation through examinations and papers in most cases, and is done both inside and outside the classroom by faculty, business and academic professionals.

Further, student learning around each of the University competencies is a focus of assessment activities. Student learning assessment is anchored in the use of ePortfolios throughout the student’s program of study. The University is committed to improve its program offerings by comparing student assessment outcomes to the program and course goals.

All Harrisburg University students – regardless of major – complete an internship of at least 135 hours in their field. This is real world experience that is highly valued by future employers. It can make a difference in whether YOU get the job or the other guy. Plus, every student completes two project that gives hands-on real world experience working in the field. When an employer asks if you can do the job, you’ll be able to say, “here’s the proof!”

It begins with a Foundation in general education courses so you can create competencies in areas such as critical thinking and problem solving, effective communication, understanding global and societal issues, and quantitative reasoning. The development of Specialized expertise in your major follows so you gain competencies areas such as applications of technology, teamwork and collaboration, and management and economics of technologies. We add Experiential components to your education that bring the world of work into the classroom and the world of work becomes the classroom through our mentors, capstone projects, case studies, internships and corporate faculty. And, regardless of your major, you graduate having demonstrated mastery of eight core competencies that employers and community leaders desire so you possess the skills necessary to enjoy a long-term career.
