Hasselt University's headquarters are in the Old Prison (Oude Gevangenis) on Hasselt Campus. This building on Martelarenlaan in Hasselt is the first place to go when you first enrol al the university and for all contacts with the student administration as a student.

The student administration's services and student facilities, the study coaches and the ombuds person can of course be contacted in Building D (block D) on Diepenbeek Campus. Teaching for the law programme is mainly provided on the city campus in Hasselt.

Students on other programmes usually attend classes (in various buildings) on Diepenbeek Campus. Students can commute by public transport between the two campuses.

Hasselt University has six faculties that control teaching and research. Each faculty forms an education management team (OMT) and an Examination Board for each programme.

Various departments operate within the faculties. These bring together all staff performing research and teaching within the same discipline. Each department in turn consists of one or more research groups. These are responsible for the organisation of specialist research.

Running across this classic tree structure of faculties, research groups and departments are the research institutes. These group together researchers from different research groups who perform research in certain priority areas. The entire research spectrum is covered in this way, from fundamental research via applied research to practical applications.

The Transnational University of Limburg is a unique partnership of two universities in two countries: Hasselt University and Maastricht University. The computer science / knowledge technology, statistics and biomedical sciences / molecular life sciences programmes have already been brought into this partnership. The Bachelor of Law programme is a joint initiative of Hasselt University, Maastricht University and KU Leuven. Collaborations with other universities are also being sought in other scientific fields.

Hasselt University is structured as a matrix organisation, directing education, research and valorisation in an integrated manner.

At the highest level we distinguish the 6 faculties and schools. They manage the academic education and research policy of the faculty or school. Every faculty counts several capacity groups. They group all staff members conducting research and teaching within the same discipline. Each capacity group consists of one or more research groups, responsible for the organisation of the specialised research.

This classical tree structure of faculties, capacity groups and research groups is traversed by the research institutes. The 6 research institutes work interdisciplinary and consist of researchers from different research groups conducting research within a particular research area. The entire research spectrum is covered, from fundamental research via applied research to practical applications. The research institutes aim at achieving a critical mass and greater visibility, which in turn increases the efficiency of the research.

In the new education and research positioning of Hasselt University, the international component plays an obvious and natural role: Hasselt University aims to be a creative hub in an international knowledge and innovation web for its students, researchers and other stakeholders. Hasselt University is innovative, result-oriented, open, social and international but at the same time has a regional base.

Modern and well equipped university in the center of the city of Hasselt. The staff is always friendly and eager to help you in Dutch, French or English. There are a lot of nice places for studying and the classrooms are light and well equipped. The prices in the cafeteria are student-friendly and the food tastes pretty good. Nice to know: UHasselt was the former prison, in some places you can still see that.
