Hoosac School

Hoosac School was founded in Hoosick, New York in 1889. For over 125 years Hoosac has been enrolling boarders and day students in Forms II-VI (Grades 8-12) and our postgraduate program. As a coeducational, college preparatory school, Hoosac celebrates each student's individuality in all aspects of their educational life. Our low student-to-teacher ratio, challenging academics, and active social life in a caring and supportive community prepares all Hoosac students for the rigor of college and life ahead. Our school is one of the best small co-educational preparatory boarding schools located in the capital region of New York. While being situated in New York, we are a very close drive to Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Currently, the school has over 75 courses and an incredible 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Hoosac School, which is rich with tradition, builds a strong sense of community through small class sizes, on and off campus activities, and our annual yule log celebration. Additionally, most of our teachers live on campus and are available in the evenings for extra help or just some conversation. We adhere to the principles of Mastery Teaching, which fosters critical thinking skills in our Hoosac students. From morning until evening, they are encouraged to ask questions, make connections between the topics they learn in their classes, and go as far as they can intellectually. As one of the top boarding high schools in New York, we want every person who attends Hoosac to leave with a greater understanding of the world and their place in it.

Some students are driven by competing on sports teams, others are interested in staying fit and healthy without the rigors of being in a competitive environment. At Hoosac, we have all kinds of athletic choices for our young men and women. For those interested in competing at elite levels, Hoosac is part of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council, which provides athletes with exposure to top northeastern colleges and universities.

The visual and performing arts are important to teachers and students at Hoosac, because they help us gain deeper insights into world cultures, literature, politics, ethics, religion, architecture and other disciplines.
