A personal reference letter, also known as a character recommendation or reference letter, is a supporting document that is crafted by somebody who can advocate for a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and abilities. Usually, such letters are required during life-changing events, such as landing a new job, buying a home, or applying to a school or educational program.

Personal reference letters can be written by colleagues, teachers, clients, neighbors, vendors and any other person who can recommend and attest to a candidate’s skills and abilities. Generally, these letters should be tailored to the person being supported and the role or responsibilities/situation involved. The letter should contain information about how you know the candidate and the reasons why you are recommending them. A personal reference letter should also focus on specific skills that the candidate has and highlight their personality as well as soft skills.

Tips on how to write a personal reference letter

Similar to other recommendation letters, you should only agree to write a personal reference letter if you are comfortable endorsing the person and you are in a position to write a positive and enthusiastic letter.

In the letter, ensure you include information about how you know the candidate and details about the individual’s principles, values, experience or background, that is relevant to the situation. For instance, if you are writing for a lawyer seeking to be admitted to the bar, you’ll want to emphasize their legal professional experience or high academic excellence. And if writing for an individual without any professional experience, you’ll want to concentrate on their experiences, skills, and abilities that they gained while in school through extra-curricular activities.

Additionally, focus on the candidate’s strongest attributes, skills or qualities, that will help him/her stand out. Ensure you include examples to support these attributes. Also, include your contact information just in case the recipient wishes to communicate with you directly. Finally, proofread and edit the letter before submitting it.
