Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research (IISERs) were established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, based on the recommendation of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.

Five IISERs were created initially and they are functioning at Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopaland Thiruvananthapuram. The sixth IISER was established in Tirupati. The seventh member of the IISER family is IISER Berhampur. The basic mandate of the IISERs is to carry out research in frontier areas of science and to provide quality science education at the undergraduate and the postgraduate levels. Each IISER is an autonomous institution and it awards its own degrees.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Mohali envisions a new generation of scientists dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge in frontier areas of basic sciences. In an intellectually vibrant academic environment, IISER Mohali nurtures the basic tenets of science education and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In so doing, the institute aims to emerge as a global centre of learning, academic excellence, and innovative research.

As a centre of academic excellence, IISER Mohali has as its mission the imparting of quality science education and the inculcating of the spirit of research through innovative teaching and research methodologies. It is this unique combination that renders IISER Mohali one of the premier science research institutes in the country. It fosters a group of young aspiring minds driven by curiosity and a potential for cutting-edge research. For spearheading robust scientific research, academic freedom is of utmost importance, and IISER Mohali is the fitting place in this regard. Promoting diversity, IISER Mohali welcomes a wide spectrum of disciplines, cutting across disciplinary boundaries. The institute provides students with a platform for interdisciplinary research which not only gives them a well-rounded perspective but also helps them keep in view the sociological relevance of science education and research.

Library of IISER Mohali is situated in the Informatics Centre. IISER Mohali library epitomizes the spirit of the institute, i.e., the pursuit of knowledge. The present library design of Institute offers an opportunity to transform the library's role on campus from a provider of information to a facilitator of learning. The library is a space for creative and innovative exchange of scholarly information and also a place for peaceful learning and collective voice reading. The library houses electronic and print versions of books (general, text, and reference books), journals, databases from various fields of study, namely, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Earth/Environmental Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences. The library provides unfailing access to essential and specialized library resources which aid teaching, learning, and research activities. In tune with the recent advancement in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), IISER Mohali has set up a library with state of the art technology and world class infrastructure.

The Sports facilities of IISER Mohali include Athletics track, BasketBall Court, Throwball & Volley ball Court, Badminton & Table Tennis, Chess and a huge ground to play Cricket, Football, Kabbadi and Kho Kho.

While studying and staying at IISER Mohali is an exhilarating experience, it can be quite stressful for students new to the system. In recognition of this fact, IISER Mohali has set up this counseling service for students. Further, a mentoring system involving senior students as well as faculty members has also been put in place. Every first year student is allotted two student mentors (drawn from a volunteer pool of students from senior batches) and one faculty advisor. The students are encouraged to remain in regular contact with their mentors and apprise them of their progress and their problems with the mentors.
