Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Sarah O’Regan, the Principal/CEO of GEMS Wellington Academy, Silicon Oasis. In this insightful conversation, Sarah shared her vision for the school, discussed the challenges and opportunities in education, and highlighted the strategies and initiatives employed to ensure all students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Our academy focus is driven by our School Development Plan, which is shaped by KHDA inspection recommendations, historical data, and stakeholder feedback. These sources help us identify key areas for improvement and ensure our initiatives align with both current needs and our school vision. This year, our focus is on enhancing our inclusion provision, ensuring that we meet the diverse needs of all students through curriculum adaptations and bespoke pathways. We are also working on improving our onsite facilities to create a more accessible and supportive environment that fosters equal opportunities for learning and development.
Over the next five years, education will potentially face challenges in three key areas. Technology integration and innovation will require balancing digital tools with responsible usage. Student well-being will be crucial as rising stress, anxiety, and social media impact students. Lastly, globalisation and diversity will demand inclusive practices and cultural competency in international schools, ensuring that diverse backgrounds are respected while fostering a supportive, unified learning environment for all students.
To keep students engaged, we focus on real-world learning through project-based and inquiry-driven instruction. Adaptations and support ensure personalised learning with scaffolding and intervention. We give students a voice and choice through choice boards and self-directed projects. Additionally, mentorship, well-being support, and recognition help build relationships and celebrate achievements, boosting motivation.
Through our inclusive WSO Way approach, which promotes positive behaviour and seamless integration of new students, we ensure all students feel welcome and have equal chances to succeed. Community events that engage families, continuous onboarding, and strong communication with parents and external partners foster a supportive, inclusive environment for all.
The school is proactive in addressing student stress and bullying through its Growell wellbeing framework, focusing on mental health, resilience, and emotional literacy. Clear anti-bullying policies are supported by peer mentoring and a dedicated well-being team of counsellors and pastoral leads. Parent and teacher collaboration includes workshops, campaigns, and communication channels.
We help students build essential life skills through a future-ready curriculum that focuses on critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Our career guidance and university preparation provision offers counselling and work experience. Entrepreneurial and leadership programmes foster innovation, while global citizenship initiatives promote social responsibility. Additionally, we teach financial and digital literacy through project-based learning and within the Post-16 curriculum to prepare students for independence in an evolving world.
The community is at the heart of the school, with parent ambassadors fostering strong connections and supporting school events. Community engagement involves partnerships with local organisations. Workshops and training empower parents on education trends and wellbeing. Student-led initiatives encourage social impact, while our open-door policy promotes feedback and collaboration.
We attract and retain great teachers by offering professional growth through leadership pathways and continuous CPD. A supportive, community-driven environment encourages collaboration, well-being, and innovation. Recognition and appreciation foster a positive workplace, while purpose-driven leadership inspires staff. Our strong history of retention reflects the supportive, long-term commitment to our teachers.
Teachers at our school have clear leadership pathways through structured development programmes. We offer mentorship and coaching for personalised support and encourage action research and innovation to lead initiatives. The culture promotes a drive and enthusiasm for leadership, with secondments and promotions supporting internal career progression. We recognise excellence by celebrating leadership contributions at all levels.
After-school activities like debate and public speaking build confidence and communication skills, while innovation/robotics enhance problem-solving for future careers. Sports foster leadership and teamwork, and our SWA tutor group excels in sports leadership. Performing arts encourage creativity, while community service (including Duke of Edinburgh) instills responsibility and empathy.
Our success is encapsulated in our mission and vision: ‘World Class, World Ready – a Story for Every Child’.
With aspiration, unity, and integrity, we unlock potential and create a future where every challenge leads to growth.
