Established in 1973, KIS currently provides an education for students aged 3 years to 18 years old. We take pride in providing an education that develops all aspects of a student’s intellectual, physical, creative, social and moral character.
We recognise that each member of our community is unique and for us to be able to provide your child with the very best education, we need to be student-centred in our approach. We challenge each student to strive for personal and professional excellence in all that they do, so that they are well prepared for the challenges of tomorrow’s world.
In the words of our School’s Mission:
“At Kinabalu International School we are dedicated to providing an excellent education in a caring, respectful environment, challenging students to achieve their full potential as successful global citizens.”
Our student body is comprised of over 30 different nationalities from around the world and our very capable and professional teaching staff represent nearly ten nationalities. Our educational programmes follow the English National Curriculum where students are supported and guided to develop their skills and knowledge. Leading to the Cambridge International IGCSE and A-Level examinations, our students are well-prepared to enter universities throughout the world.
As an international school located in the heart of Asia, we aim to provide a safe, inclusive and caring environment in which young people can learn to live and work together in a spirit of harmony and mutual respect. We encourage each student to play an active role in school life, both in and out of the classroom. We are fortunate to have a very supportive and interested parent body and we encourage open, two-way communication between home and school.
KIS is very proud to be a not for profit school, owned and operated by parents for the benefit of their children. The school is managed by a supportive and forward-thinking Board of Governors, which is elected annually by parents. In addition, we have a very active Parents and Teachers Association who organise and support many excellent KIS community events during the year and who also raise funds to help the development of our school.
We are proud of our school and of the achievements of the members of our school community, but we are not complacent. We seek to continuously improve the quality of our facilities and the educational programmes we offer to better serve our students’ learning and personal development.
The curriculum at KIS is based on the English National Curriculum, and adapted where appropriate for use in an international school. In the Secondary school we offer the Cambridge IGCSE and A Level programmes. Lessons are taught using a wide variety of methods, incorporating digital technology where relevant and ensuring each student has the opportunity to achieve their own potential.
The school will develop the whole child through the combination of a wide breadth of academic options, an extensive extra curricular programme, leadership opportunities, excellent resources and exciting learning opportunities, delivered by highly experienced staff.
Teachers at KIS are recruited through a rigorous process designed to ensure our students benefit from the best teaching possible. New overseas staff are typically employed direct from the UK or from other International Schools abroad. All must have accredited teaching qualifications and a minimum of three years’ teaching experience. Our staff are committed and hard working, approachable and professional, providing guidance and support to students and parents alike.

Thank you once again for doing your part to keep Edarabia the most trusted education source.
The best part of KIS is its teachers. They are so friendly and caring. They go out of their way to help you, and are not afraid to give criticism when necessary. This allowed me to develop so much as a student. When returning to the school as an undergraduate, I was welcomed with smiles and hugs, which I think says it all.

Superb School with dedicated teachers and small class sizes which allow students to recieve teaching specific to their educational needs. Exam results are consistently of high and very high standards across The secondary schools subject areas. Students often have recieved highest marks in Malaysia in several areas of academic studies.

I was a primary school student at KIS from 1984 to 1989 when it was at the old campus on Jalan Likas. Mr Kenneth Stebbing was the principal then and we had only 40 children in the entire school! I have very fond memories of KIS and I am glad to see it is still going strong!

A great environment that helps to grow students' confidence, resilience, worldly knowledge, and provides space to foster every child's individual interests even outside of academia.
