Japanese International School is an international, co-educational school offering the I.B. Primary Years Programme for student from the age of 4 years old (Reception class) up until 11 years old (Primary 6). Our students come from all over the world and are taught in the medium of English.

Entry to the school is based on a completed application form, followed by an interview at the school. For younger children we try to arange group interviews in which the children can comfortably play and relax - 'playdate style'. Older students are sometimes interviewed in small groups or as individuals, should applications warrant this. The most important criteria for interview is the child's ability to comfortably access the curriculum of the school. The PYP programme is the school curriculum and is a language intensive programme taught in English. We require that the students are comfortable using English as a language of conversation, research and debate. We do offer ESL support for some students whom we believe will gain from our curriculum and who will contribute to the aims and mission statement of the school.

Admission Policy

Admission to JIS is open to any child regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender.

Our school specialises in offering an I.B. education in a unique educational context. We offer a very dynamic PYP (Primary Years Programme) curriculum that appeals to a wide range of international students within Hong Kong. Our perspective is very international which is reflected in our very diverse student clientele. In order to access and enjoy our curriculum we assess students upon entry to the school. We assess their understanding and competence in using English as a medium of instruction and then ask them to perform a range of age related standardised tasks.

We do have  EAL (English as an Additional Language) support staff, so we may admit a proprotion of students who may benefit from extra support in English. This proportion is controlled to carefully balance the needs for each class.

Interviews are only performed should a place be available. Applications are retained by the school and kept on file. Parents are contacted in order of application date and admissions criteria. Applications are only removed from the JIS system at the request of parents.

Application for Reception and Primary 1 classes is encouraged the year before entry as interviews are held in February of the admission year for an August start. For example, interviews for Reception Class for August 2019 will be held in January / February 2019.

Entry to JIS, in line with other International Schools in Hong Kong, is by date of birth. Below are listed the dates for entry to our current year groups and future years. For any further clarification please contact the school office - Ms. Sachiyo Miyajima +85228343531.

Students wishing to enter JIS for the current school year: 2018-19 will be interviewed should a space become available in the appropriate class. Parents will be contacted using information supplied on the application form. Should families re-locate within Hong Kong or not be interested in pursuing their JIS application, we ask that they contact the school to update the details held on file.

Admission Procedure

Admission to JIS is based on an interview which takes place with the school Principal and /or a group of the class teachers. The main requirement for entry to the school is based on a students' ability to access our curriculum using English. The school does sometimes offer ESL (English as a Second Language) support but the proprtion of students accepted for this progamme is limited.

Interviews are held only when places are available but can be arranged at any point during the school year should a vacancy arise. Interviews for Reception and some Primary 1 places are held as group interviews (JIS playdates!) with several children attending at the same time. This allows the children to feel more relaxed and to be able to enjoy some time with a group of our teachers in a fun / play orientated situation. These interviews usually last for around 1 hour. Parents are informed of the results of their interview as quickly as possible, usually within the next few days, or on the day of the interview.

Application for Reception and Primary 1 classes is encouraged at least the year before required entry as interviews are held in January or February of the admission year for an August start. Application and interview fee is due on application to the school.
