Family Policy

THS is a family-based school and we expect that, in most cases, all of the age-appropriate children in one family will apply. Siblings are given priority in acceptance. Please check with the THS admissions department if the applicant has siblings applying to or attending another school. The school reserves the right to not accept any student who has an eligible school-age sibling that does not attend The Harbour School.

Priorities

  • Siblings of currently enrolled students
  • Families who apply for all age-appropriate children are prioritized
  • Previously enrolled THS students who have returned from another country

Assessments and Trial Days

Students applying to Junior Grade 1 & Grade 1 will be asked to attend a trial day at THS. Grade 2 to 6 applicants may be requested to attend a trial day to determine level of support if needed. Trial days allow us to ensure that the child and family are familiar with the school, and it allows the admissions team to do a general in-class evaluation: how a child fares within the student-teacher ratio THS offers (average 8:1), how a child handles class routines and transitions, how he/she learns alongside peers, and how he/she works independently.

In addition, Grade 3 to 6 applicants will need to complete the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Screening Test in Math, Reading and Language. This typically takes about an hour to complete.

Our school does not require even performance in all academic areas, however please note that for students to be successful at THS within the class setting, he/she must be able to demonstrate the ability to conceptually access curriculum inclusive of our Junior Great Books seminars, Oracy to Literacy activities, integrated hands-on science and social studies units.

Admissions Decisions

Acceptance

If the applicant is qualified and space is available, a formal letter of acceptance will be sent by email along with important information for enrollment. The family has 7 days to accept the offer and provide payment for the family debenture and entry fee to guarantee enrollment.

Waiting Pool

If the applicant has completed all qualifications to be accepted to The Harbour School, but the current grade level has no vacancies or if the applicant requires Learning Enhancement Services that are currently at capacity, the applicant will be placed in our waiting pool until an available space opens up.

The waiting pool does not operate on a first come first serve basis. There are certain criteria the admission team uses to decide which student will fill up an open spot. Such criteria includes, gender, sibling priority, nationality or learning enhancement needs.

Deferring Acceptance

The family can choose to defer acceptance for one year through the following options:

  • Purchasing a Family Debenture at the current year thus giving them priority over any new applications for the following year.
  • Deferring acceptance without purchasing the family debenture will treat the application like any new application for the following year.

Should the family decide to defer again for another year, they must reapply.

Recommendation to The Children's Institute (TCI)

Students may be recommended to only enrolled with one-to-one support provided by our partner organisation, The Children's Institute of Hong Kong (TCI).
