Year 7 Admission

Admission to Beths Grammar School into Year 7 is open to those who are deemed selective following the Bexley Selection Tests which are held in September.

Results from the Selection Tests are sent to parents during the middle of October and by 31 October you should have completed a Common Application Form (CAF) and returned it to your own Local Authority. The CAF is where you list all the schools, in preference, that you wish for your son to attend. Letters will be sent, from your Local Authority, at the beginning of March detailing which school your son is being offered.

At Beths Grammar School, we offer 192 places into Year 7. To be eligible for a place at Beths, your son will firstly have been deemed selective in the Bexley Selection Tests. Places are then offered according to our oversubscription criteria

Where applications for admission exceed the number of places available, the following criteria will be applied for students deemed selective in the Bexley Test, in the order set out below, to decide which students to admit:

  • Applicants who are or have been Children in Local Authority Care.*
  • Those boys identified by the Local Authority as achieving one of the highest 180 scores in the selection tests.
  • For applicants with a sibling currently attending Beths Grammar School at the time of enrolment. A sibling includes full, half, adopted and step-brother or sister living at the same address.
  • Applicants with a parent or registered carer employed by Beths Grammar School on a permanent contract at the time of application.
  • Up to 12 places for boys who are eligible for Pupil Premium and/or Free School Meals and deemed selective at the time of application in rank order of distance from the school. A supplementary form will be downloadable from the school website and will need to be returned to the school by 31st October for those wishing to be considered under this criteria.
  • On the basis of proximity to the school measured by reference to the shortest radial distance (direct line distance between the applicant’s home address to Beths Grammar School’s east entrance in Hartford Road). In cases where parents live at different addresses, the home address is that at which the child resides for the greater part of the week.
  • Where the distance is identical to 0.001 of a mile, the scores in the selection tests will be used as a tie-breaker with priority given to the higher score.
  • Where none of the above apply (not deemed selective in the Bexley 11+ test), but a child has been deemed selective in the Kent (Dartford 11+) test and can supply the School with confirmation of this. The order for this criterion is Applicants who are or have been a Child in Local Authority Care, 2. Applicants with a sibling attending Beths Grammar School at the time of enrolment, 3. Applicants with a parent employed by Beths Grammar School on a permanent contract at the time of application, 4. Pupil Premium/Free School Meals applicants (only available if this criterion under being deemed selective in the Bexley 11+ test has not already been exhausted. 5. Distance - On the basis of proximity to the school measured by reference to the shortest radial distance (direct line distance between the applicant’s home address to Beths Grammar School’s east entrance in Hartford Road). Where the distance is identical to 0.001 of a mile, the scores in the selection tests will be used as a tie-breaker with priority given to the higher score.

* A 'looked after child' or a child who was previously looked after but immediately after being looked after but became subject to adoption, child arrangements, or special guardianship order, including those who appear to Bexley LA to have been in state care outside of England and cease to be in state care as a result of being adopted. A looked after child is a child who is (a) in the care of a local authority, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in the exercise of their social services functions (see the definition in Section 22(1) of Children Act 1989).

In-Year Admissions

A ‘casual’ or 'in year' admission is when a student is admitted to the school, outside of the normal secondary transfer period (when a student enters the school from Year 6 into Year 7).

For a boy to be considered for a place at Beths Grammar School, he must have been deemed selective in the Bexley Selection Tests. Procedures for making a secondary transfer have recently changed and all parents of students wishing to apply for a place, at Beths Grammar School, whether they live in Bexley or in a neighbouring local authority, must complete a ‘Bexley In Year Application Form’ which is available on Bexley Council's website If your child is not currently in a Bexley school it is advisable to complete the Bexley ‘In Year’ Application Form as this will give access to all of the schools in Bexley rather than just the selective schools.

We are currently full in all year groups and have a waiting list running. If your son has been deemed selective you can ask for him to be placed on a waiting list for the appropriate year group. We will only contact you if a place becomes available. We will contact the person at the top of the list to offer them a place at the school, if they reject the place, we move onto the next in line and continue until we have an acceptance.
