Admissions Process

Oakfields Preparatory is a non-selective independent school for children aged 3 to 11. We are always delighted to meet prospective families and help guide you through the steps to joining us at Oakfields.

Contact

Make contact with us. We always like to meet families, talk about your child and your circumstances and help you decide if Oakfields feels like the right place for you and your family. Make contact with us via our webform, email or telephone and we will talk you through the next steps.

Visiting the school

We are delighted to welcome families for a personal tour, or to one of our regular Open Days. Our Open Days run on the the last Thursday of every month (in term time), or we will happily arrange a tour at a time that suits you.

Registering your child

To register for a place at Oakfields, we ask that you complete our registration form and pay your registration fee. As soon as we receive this, we will make contact with next steps.

Taster Day and Informal Assessment

It is important that your child has a chance to experience Oakfields so we like to invite them in for a Taster Day so they can meet their classmates and see what day to day life will be like.

For children joining Nursery or Pre-Prep (Reception) we tend to do a very short, informal assessment to ensure your child can access our curriculum. Subject to a place being available, children can join us at any stage.

For children joining Years 1-6, a short, informal activity will be given to your child to complete so we are able to understand their current baseline and ensure they will be able to access our fast paced curriculum.

Offer of a place

We aim to make offers within one week of your child attending a Taster Day.

Accepting your place

If you make the decision that Oakfields is the right school for your child, we ask that you complete our final paperwork and pay your refundable deposit. Once all paperwork has been received, we will confirm your child’s place and begin to talk to you about transition, uniform and becoming part of the Oakfields community!

Entry Assessments 7+

Join us in Year 3

To join us in September for Year 3, we have a round of assessments which are structured as follows:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Mathematics.
  • We also also introduce activities so we are able to assess communication skill, behaviour and how children interact, socially, with their peers and teaching staff throughout the morning.

Your child will be formally invited to an assessment, and this will take place in early February each year. Only those children registered will be invited for assessment.

The assessment takes place in the morning and lasts approximately 3 hours. It is designed to test numerical, language and reading skills which underpin a child’s ability to cope well with the pace and level of the curriculum and the organisational demands of the school’s busy curricular and co-curricular programme.

To register your child for this assessment, please contact our Admissions Manager, at admissions@oakfieldsschool.co.uk or 01708 256721.

International Admissions

Students who are non-native English speakers will be asked to meet online with a member of our parent company, Cognita’s, international team, who will informally assess their English language level. The international team will then advise the school whether the student would benefit from additional support with their English prior to enrolment and/or during the first year of their studies.

Oakfields Preparatory and Cognita work with a range of international student recruitment agencies, education consultants and relocation agents. Agents and consultants are invited to contact the international admissions team at Cognita about representation.

International Admissions English as an Additional Language

Students who need support with English as an Additional Language prior to enrolment and/or during the first year of their studies may be referred to Cognita’s English language school, Ardmore. Ardmore have over 35 years’ experience supporting young English learners and have recently developed an online platform – Ardmore X – to support teacher-led and independent study. Ardmore can support international students prepare for life at school in the UK in the weeks and months prior to the start of term. They can also support students throughout their first few terms with us, scheduling online English lessons outside of the standard school day.
