Many of our children join St John and St James’ in the Nursery, aged three. A place in the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the main school but children meeting the Local authority’s entry requirements will move on to Reception where they will be joined by children new to the school. St John and St James’ is governed by Hackney’s admission procedures.
Reception class admission arrangements – Hackney Education
Full details of the admissions criteria and a copy of the admission form for Reception are available on the Hackney Education Website.
The Hackney Education are responsible for setting the admission arrangements for all schools for which they are the Admission Authority – that is, community and voluntary controlled schools in the borough.
For voluntary-aided schools, academies, foundation schools or free schools each school governing body or Academy Trust is their own admission authority.
Reception Admissions
If your child was born between 1st September and 31st August , they are due to start primary school in September The closing date for applying for your child’s primary school place is around 15th January and any applications received after this date will be treated as late.

Nursery Admissions
Nursery applications are dealt with directly by the school. Please visit the main office to collect an application pack.
To help with the process, please ensure that you check your eligibility for 30 hours of childcare by visiting www.gov.uk and completing the eligibility checker. If you are eligible for 30 hour childcare, please provide us with you 11 digit eligibility code to support us in allocating the correct place to your child.
Nursery applications are allocated using the same admissions criteria as the schools reception places.
Appeals Process
If you have applied for admission to our school and have been unsuccessful you have the right to appeal against this decision by following Hackney Learning Trust’s Appeals Process. All appeals are managed direct by Hackney Learning Trust;
What happens next?
Once your appeal has been submitted, you will be given a date for your appeal hearing at least ten days in advance.
You case will be heard by a panel of between three to five impartial members of the public but the panel will not give their decision at the hearing. You will be told the result of your appeal by post within seven days.
The decision of the panel will be legally binding and if your appeal is successful your child will be given a place at the school. If your appeal is unsuccessful, your child will not be given a place but you will still be able to put their name on the school’s waiting list.
