Many of our children join St John the Baptist in the Nursery, aged three. A place in the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the main school however. We encourage all our families with children in nursery to apply for a place in our Reception. Children meeting the local authority’s entry requirements move on to Reception. As we have two classes in Reception, we do have places for children who do not attend our nursery.
Nursery children are allocated either part-time (15 hours) or full-time (30 hours) spaces. All children who are aged 3 and 4 years old receive 15 hours free child care. Children with working parents may be entitled to 30 hours of free childcare. To check if you are eligible for the 30 free hours childcare and to apply, please go to www.childcarechoices.gov.uk. There is also information about the different types of services and support available to parents.
St John the Baptist is governed by Hackney’s admission procedures. A copy of the admission form for Reception is available on the Hackney Education website.
The Hackney Education website are responsible for setting the admission arrangements for all schools for which they are the Admission Authority – that is, community and voluntary controlled schools in the borough.
For voluntary-aided schools, academies, foundation schools or free schools each school governing body or Academy Trust is their own admission authority.
From time to time, we also have vacancies in other year groups. To apply for a place for one of our Years 1 to 6 classes, parents need to go to the Hackney Learning Trust to fill out a mid-term transfer form. We encourage visits to the school for prospective families. If you would like to arrange a visit to see the school, please call the school office on 0207 739 4902 you can also register your interest and we will call you to arrange a time for a tour.

The deadline for Secondary School applications is on Thursday 31st October. At St John the Baptist, we advise parents to complete Secondary Applications before half-term. Parents / Carers must choose 6 Secondary schools. Attending secondary school Open Days / Evenings with your child will ensure you have made an informed decision.
We are holding an afternoon for Year 6 parents to provide them with more information on the application process on Monday 23rd September at 3:00 pm in the dining hall. If you cannot attend the session or would like to revisit what was discussed, Joy, our Pastoral Care Manager, is available to help parents apply for schools. If you would like to arrange an appointment with Joy, please call the school office. Please note this year’s date for applications will be published and shared with Year 6 parents as soon as they are known to the school.
