7+, 8+ And 9+ Entry

Dear Parents,

We are delighted that you are interested in sending your son to King’s College Junior School (KCJS) and we hope you find the information on these pages helpful. KCJS is an academically selective, independent school.

The school welcomes boys from all social, ethnic and cultural backgrounds who will benefit from the education we offer and contribute positively to the wider life of the school. We look forward to meeting you and your boys in due course.

Entry Process

Each September, the junior school admits about 54 pupils into year 3 at 7+, 14 pupils into year 4 at 8+ and 12 pupils into year 5 at 9+. A pupil’s year group is strictly determined by their age on 1 September in the year of admission. Thus a pupil born on 31 August will be the youngest in their year group and a pupil born on 1 September will be the oldest in the following year group.

In order for pupils to sit our assessments parents must register their child via the online registration form. Visit the 'How to register' page for further information.

Children are admitted from both independent and maintained schools. It is important that parents discuss their plans in relation to our entry assessments with their current school as, at the end of September preceding the written assessments, activity sessions and interview, we will write to the candidates' current Heads to inform them which of their pupils will be sitting our assessments and invite them to submit a short report.

If we are unable to offer a candidate a place or they are withdrawn before the assessments and parents wish them to sit for the following year’s entry point a new registration must be submitted.

Year 5 (9+) is the last point of entry into the Junior School. If we are unable to offer a candidate a place or they are withdrawn before the assessments and parents wish them to sit for a later point of entry they should refer to the 11+, 13+ or 16+ admissions information.

It is important that parents notify [email protected] of any changes to their contact details or if their child changes their current school.

Reports

At the end of September preceding the written assessments, activity sessions and interview, we will write to the candidates' current Heads to inform them which of their pupils will be sitting our assessments and invite them to submit a short report.

Written Assessments

In each age group there are papers in English, Mathematics and Reasoning together with a listening test. The leaflet ‘Entrance Examination Notes’ gives details of these papers and can be found here. In line with the Equality Act 2010, exam concessions may be available for candidates with a physical disability, long-term medical condition or a specific learning need, or for candidates for whom English is an Additional Language. Parents are advised to consult the Entrance Examination concessions policy for further information.

English test

The English test takes 45 minutes and is divided into two sections. Section A is a comprehension test where pupils answer questions on unseen information. Section B is a test of writing, where credit is given for good spelling, punctuation and paragraphing, as well as imaginative and exciting use of vocabulary. It is worth noting that irrelevant answers or pre-learnt sentences will be penalised.

Listening test

The listening test is approximately 25 minutes long and is played via speakers. All candidates hear the same recording. It will comprise a short listening exercise and a final section based on following the instructions heard in the recording.

Mathematics test

The Mathematics test takes 45 minutes and is based on the Year 2 National Curriculum syllabus (for 7+ entry) or the Year 3 National Curriculum (for 8+ entry). However, some extension questions are available to challenge able candidates.

Reasoning test

This might comprise verbal or non-verbal questions, or a combination of the two.

Activity Sessions and Interviews

Following the written assessments, those who have shown they have the potential to reach our academic demands and thrive in the environment the school offers will be invited back to the school to be interviewed and to take part in the activity session. Please refer to the key dates.

The parents of those we deem not ready to join us will be notified before the activity sessions and interviews take place. Please refer to the key dates.

Activity sessions

At each entry point, selected candidates will take part in a series of classroom-based activities that enable us to see different aspects of their personalities and abilities. There is no set formula to the content of the activity session and no possibility of specific preparation.

Interviews

The exam candidates that took part in the activity session will be required to attend a twenty minute interview with a senior member of the Junior School staff. The candidates will be interviewed in pairs. Parents will be notified of the date and time of their child’s interview which cannot be changed. Please refer to the key dates.

Offer of Places

In awarding places, the Headmaster will take into account all the information that has been gathered during the selection process. Each year more candidates qualify by their performance than the junior school has places to admit. Such candidates and others not quite ready are welcome to return as candidates in a subsequent year.

King’s College Junior School does not have a sibling policy; each candidate gains their place on individual merit.

HOW TO REGISTER

Entry at 7+, 8+ and 9+

Please register your son for the entry assessments for a place at KCJS by completing the online registration form on our website and paying the registration fee of £150*. The registration form must be completed and the £150* registration fee paid every year a parent wishes their son to sit the assessments for the junior school. Parents must ensure they keep the school updated with any change of contact details or change of current school.

Boys are admitted into the junior school on the understanding that their parents intend them to move up to the senior school at the age of 11, subject to the usual entry requirements and the absence of unforeseen circumstances requiring a change of plan.

For possible entry in September , the registration form must be completed and the registration fee received by 11:00 am on Friday 20th September at the latest. Late registrations will not be accepted, and boys will not be considered as exam candidates unless the registration form and fee has been received by the deadline. Unfortunately, there can be no exception to this. Registration for possible entry in September will open on 1 October .

In line with the Equality Act 2010, applications are welcome from candidates with a physical disability, long-term medical condition or a specific learning need. As part of the process, parents of candidates with a physical disability, long-term medical condition or a specific learning need must make this known to the school when they complete the online registration form. Any formal documentation from an appropriate professional, such as a report from an educational psychologist or medical consultant must be uploaded with the application. Failure to disclose any such condition at this stage may result in the school being unable to put in place appropriate provision for your son should he be offered a place a King’s, and in some circumstances may result in the offer of a place being withdrawn. For more information on the school’s policy regarding candidates with special education needs and disabilities please read the school’s admissions policy under policies and documents on the useful information section of the school's website which has links to the exam concessions and reasonable adjustments policies. If you are unable to supply a specialist report at this stage, please attach a summary of your child’s condition, and send the full report to the admissions office as soon as possible, at the latest before the registration deadline. Parents are advised to consult the Admissions policy for further information.

If you are unsure about any of these details, please do not hesitate to contact the JS Admissions office on 020 8255 5335/5336 or e-mail [email protected] where the staff will be happy to help.

*As per the terms and conditions, the registration fee is non-refundable. The only exception is where we are unable for any reason to accept your registration, in which case a refund of the fee will be made.

11+ Entry Process

Visiting the School

It is likely that the first step you will take is to arrange to visit the school. We are always delighted to welcome you here and you will find the opportunities available for visits on the Visiting and Open Events page.

Registration

Registration is the first step for candidates who wish to be considered for a place at King’s College School. We recommend that you register at the end of Year 5 or the start of year 6, no later than the deadline, which is in late October of year 6.

Registration for 11+ entry in is now closed.

Please note that King’s currently only accepts applications from students who are British or Irish citizens, or who can demonstrate that they are dependents of people legally entitled to live in the UK for the duration of their study at King’s. The School does not sponsor pupils under the Child Student Visa Scheme. In line with the Equality Act 2010 and the school's Admissions Policy, applications are welcomed from all candidates regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability or special educational need.

As part of the registration process you will complete an online application form for your son to take the 11+ and give us permission to contact your son’s head teacher for a confidential reference. You will also have the chance to tell us a little about your son’s interests and achievements and will be asked to upload a his end of year 5 school report.

Please note that it is not possible to apply for both 11+ and 13+ entry. All boys are assessed in year 6 and offers for each are made in early February.

11+ Scholarship

Academic, Music and Sport scholarships are available for year 7 entrants. Please see the 11+ Scholarships section for further details and application forms.

Help with Fees

You may want to apply for a place at King’s for your son but are worried about being able to pay the fees. King’s is committed to widening access to the school and during the registration process you will be asked if you would like to apply for a bursary (assistance with fees). More information about bursaries can be found on the Help with Fees (bursaries) page.

The Entarance Examination

The 11+ entrance examinations take place in December when boys are in year 6. There are three examinations: English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. Specimens of the English and Mathematics exams will be added to the website from September. We do not supply sample reasoning papers but these are readily available from booksellers.

In line with the Equality Act 2010, exam concessions may be available for candidates with a specific learning difficulty, disability, or long-term medical condition, or for candidates for whom English is an Additional Language. Please follow this link for more information on the Entrance Exam Concessions Policy.

Oversea Candidate

Overseas candidates who are unable to sit the written tests at King’s may be able to take the tests at their local British Council. If you would like your child to take the tests at the British Council, please contact us at [email protected].

DISABILITY, SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS, MEDICAL CONDITION OR ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

In line with the Equality Act 2010 and the school's Admissions Policy, applications are welcomed from all candidates, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability or special education need. If your son has any physical disability, long-term medical condition or specific learning difficulty you will need to let us know as part of the registration process. Information about your son's first language will be asked for in the online registration form.

The examination results

Once we have the examination results we decide which boys we want to ask back to be interviewed. To help us make this decision we look at the examination marks, the information you have supplied and your head teacher’s reference. We are looking for potential as well as current achievement and we use the interviews to help us find out more about the boys.

The interviewed

In January you will be told whether or not your son has been invited back to be interviewed. If so, he will come to King’s to be interviewed by our kind and experienced staff. If your son is not offered an interview we will, sadly, not be taking his application forward.

The Offer

Offers are made in mid-February. Those boys who will not be receiving an offer from us will also be informed on that day. You will need to confirm your acceptance of the place by returning the correct forms and paying a deposit of £2,000 by the agreed acceptance date.

Preparing to Join King’s

All boys who have been offered places in year 7 at King’s will be invited in for an induction day in the Summer term before they join King’s, when they can meet their teachers and the other boys in their year. There will also be an induction day before the beginning of the Autumn term.

*As per the terms and conditions, the registration fee is non-refundable. The only exception is where we are unable for any reason to accept your registration, in which case a refund of the fee will be made.
