Godwin Junior School is a community school, which means the London Borough of Newham is our Admission Authority. All applications for our school must be made through London Borough of Newham’s Pupil Services, not this school.
The law requires that all schools must have admission arrangements that clearly set out how children will be admitted, including the criteria that will be applied if there are more applications than places at the school. Admission arrangements are determined by Admission Authorities.
All Admission Authorities must determine (i.e. formally agree) admission arrangements annually, even if they have not changed from previous years and a consultation has not been required. Admission Authorities must determine admission arrangements for entry in September next to next year, by 28 February next year. The London Borough of Newham is the admission authority for all maintained schools located in Newham with the exception of the faith schools who are their own admission authorities. Godwin Junior School is a London Borough of Newham maintained school, meaning we must use their admission arrangements.
For any proposed changes to the existing determined arrangements, a formal consultation must take place and must be for a minimum of 6 weeks and must take place between 1 October and 31 January of the school year before those arrangements are to apply. This consultation period allows parents, other schools, religious authorities and the local community to raise any concerns about proposed arrangements. We did not propose any changes for next to next year.
You can object to these arrangements or the arrangements of any school by referring to the Office of the Schools Adjudicator. Objections to admission arrangements for entry in September next to nxt year must be referred to the Adjudicator by 15 May next year. Any decision of the Adjudicator must be acted on by the admission authority and admission arrangements amended accordingly.
We admit children in September into our four Year Three classes. We would welcome you applying for a place at our school. To do this you must follow the correct process for your child’s age as detailed below.
If your child was born between 1 September of last seventh year and 31 August of its next year and attends an infant school, you will need to apply for a Year 3 junior place in an infant or primary school for September next year. If they attend a primary school NOT an infant school you have the choice of your child staying at their primary school or applying to change to another school. If they are happy in their primary school you do not need to take any action.
If your child lives in Newham you will need to apply via London Borough of Newham. But if your child lives outside Newham, but you want him or her to go to school in Newham, you will need to apply through the local authority in the borough you live in.
Remember, if your child attends an infant school you must apply for a place, even if your child:
Before submitting a junior school application we strongly recommend all families read the autumn next year edition of the local authority's 'Starting Primary School’ guide and find out information about the school you are interested in.
We recommend you use the Newham School Finder tool to determine the location of your preferred Newham schools and calculate home to school distances.
The vast majority of our children come from Woodgrange Infant School, however, we are pleased to admit children who have not attended Woodgrange. We work closely with local infant schools in order to ensure a smooth transition for children. This involves our Year Three teachers visiting the pupils whilst they are still in Year Two at Woodgrange and also all children who will be joining us spending time at Godwin in the summer term before they become Godwin pupils. This has proven to be very successful in terms of reducing children’s anxiety about changing schools.
Year Two parents and carers are usually invited to a meeting at Godwin Junior School during the summer term before their child is due to join us. During this meeting the Head Teacher and Year 3 Leader inform parents and carers about the organisation and curriculum of the school and will be pleased to answer questions.
If your family arrives in Newham during the school year this year and your child needs a school place in the borough you must complete an In Year form naming your preferred schools and you are usually given a place within 10 days. The place offered may not be at the school you prefer as that school may not have a suitable place available.
We recommend you use the Newham School Finder tool to determine the location of your preferred Newham schools and calculate home to school distances.
The law requires that each local authority must have a Fair Access Protocol (FAP), agreed with the majority of schools in its area to ensure that for In-Year-admissions-unplaced-children, especially the most vulnerable, are offered a place at a suitable school as quickly as possible. In agreeing a protocol, the local authority must ensure that no school - including those with available places - is asked to take a disproportionate number of children who have been excluded from other schools, or who have challenging behaviour. Godwin Junior School has signed up to the LB Newham’s Fair Access Protocol.
If a parent/carer is unable to obtain a place for their child at Godwin, they have the right to appeal.
Appeals are made using the Newham Appeal Form and following the Newham policy for admission appeals.
Parents/carers can access further information at:
