Nursery admissions

Our mission

Barnes Primary Nursery provides a friendly, enthusiastic, and calm atmosphere, where high levels of engagement and sustained concentration are evident throughout. Our dedicated, compassionate staff effect high quality interactions throughout the day. Outstanding resources are linked logically to the learning intentions or the skills progressions underway at that time, whilst also providing open-ended scenarios to enable children to follow their own imagination or lines of enquiry and be challenged or supported at any moment.

We are continually motivated by how children learn and give high importance to the Characteristics of Learning: a series of phrases which signal the importance of nurturing children’s innate creativity, autonomy, and curious minds. Our understanding of how children learn underpins everything that we do at Barnes Primary Nursery. Our goal is for all our learners to be safe, happy, determined, empowered, kind, articulate, coordinated, and strong risk takers.

Important Information

Children must be 3 years old by 31st August to join nursery for the academic year. Please do not fill in this form unless your child was born between. Children should be toilet trained and able to independently use the toilet.

Nursery admissions information for Kingston and Richmond. All provision is located in Barnes Primary School Nursery and our onsite Forest School. Our nursery operates during term time only. Children attend five days per week.

Admission Criteria

Nursery places are allocated on the following criteria

  • Looked After Children who are currently in public Care and previously Looked After Children who have left Care due to adoption, special guardianship or child arrangements order.
  • Children who have an exceptional medical, social or educational need that requires their attendance at a particular school.
  • Children who have siblings already attending the school.
  • Children of staff working directly for Barnes Primary School for at least two years.
  • Children living closest to Barnes Primary School.

Admission information

We are a community primary school with a nursery offering education to children from 3 to 11 years. Our school is an inclusive one, and we are firmly committed to serving the needs of all the children in our local community. Our admissions policy is set by Richmond Local Authority.

The school admits 30 children to each of our reception classes (60 in total). Please note that children, including siblings, who are already attending our nursery need to apply for a reception place directly to the Local Authority. There is no automatic right of admission from nursery to the main primary school. Parents of children in the nursery are strongly encouraged to apply for a place in a reception class, but places will be offered according to the strict application of our admissions criteria.

We do not process the administration of applications to the main school. This is organised by the Local Authority. We are very happy to provide advice and guidance about admissions though. This can be obtained by telephoning the school, or by dropping in and speaking to Lucy Blair.

Children are normally admitted to the reception classes at the beginning of the Autumn Term, but it is possible for a child to start in the Spring Term of the term in which their fifth birthday falls. We would prefer all children to join in the Autumn Term, so the final decision about this is at the discretion of the Headteacher.

If we are oversubscribed (our maximum intake is 60 places), the London Borough of Richmond Admissions Section will allocate places using the following criteria. These are listed in priority order:

Looked After Children who are currently in public Care and previously Looked After Children who have left Care due to adoption, special guardianship or child arrangements order.

  • Children who have an exceptional medical, social or educational need that requires their attendance at a particular school.
  • Children who have siblings already attending the school.
  • Children of staff working directly for Barnes Primary School for at least two years.
  • Children living closest to Barnes Primary School.

Reception admissions

The closing date for applications for reception admissions is 15th January– all applications received after this date are late and, unfortunately, you are unlikely to gain a place in your preferred school.

You will be sent an email during the evening of Tuesday 16 April to tell you the outcome of your application. The availability of results for viewing will be staggered to assist demand, so precise timings cannot be guaranteed. You will also be able to view this by logging in to the eAdmissions website
