St Dunstan’s, Cheam, Church of England Primary School has a very strong Christian ethos which is at the heart of everything that we do and provides a high quality of care and education for every member of our school community. Christian values are promoted through the whole curriculum and we aim to motivate everyone to engage fully in the broad range of educational opportunities provided to develop their potential. We welcome applications from all members of the community. Many parents apply to this school because of its strong Christian ethos and we ask all parents to support our ethos and respect its importance to our school community.
The Governing Body is the admissions authority for the school and as such is responsible for the admissions policy.
The Governing Body is responsible for the admission of pupils to St Dunstan's and will admit 60 children to the reception year in September for those children who will become five years old between 1st September and 31st August. This admission limit has been agreed between the Governing Body and Sutton Local Authority (LA). Parents can request that the date their child is admitted to school is deferred until later in the school year or until the term in which the child reaches compulsory school age. Parents must ensure that the school is aware of any deferment before September. Parents can request that their child takes up the place part-time until the child reaches compulsory school age.
The Governing Body is required to abide by the maximum limits for infant classes (Reception, Years 1 & 2; ie. 5, 6 and 7 year olds) of 30 pupils per class.
Parents of pupils who have a statement of special educational needs or Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan are required to apply for school places separately through the LA from whom advice is available. If a child with a statement or EHC Plan is placed in the school before the normal admission round, the number of places available to other applicants will be reduced.
The school is part of the Pan London co-ordinated admissions scheme for primary admissions. Parents should apply online via their home LA's e-admission system (check LA website for closing date). For Sutton this is explained in their Starting School Guidance Booklet which is available at the sutton.gov.uk website.
If applying for a Foundation (Church) place (admissions policy criterion iii), for a Child of a Member of Staff place (admissions policy criterion v), or for a place where the child is attending our school's nursery and is eligible for the Pupil Premium (admissions policy criterion vi), parents must also complete the St Dunstan's School Supplementary Information Form, as well as naming the school as one of their preferences in the LA application process. The Supplementary Information Form is available from the school or from Forms to Download in this section. Failure to return this form to the school by the due date will mean that the application will not be ranked under the relevant criterion.
If, in order to be ranked under criteria iii, v or vi of our admissions policy, a parent completes the school's Supplementary Information Form but does not name the school in the LA application process, it will not be treated as a valid application. Late applications will be considered in accordance with the procedure set out in the co-ordinated scheme.
Attendance at the school's nursery does not guarantee a place in the reception year and parents must complete the LA application process and, if applicable, the school's Supplementary Information Form.
Nursery
The Nursery Unit is purpose built with its own entrance, cloakroom, toilets and washing facilities. The unit includes a fenced playground with outdoor equipment and a sandpit. The facilities and equipment are excellent and the staff are fully qualified and comprise a Nursery Teacher and at least one Nursery Nurse.
Our Nursery can accommodate up to 26 children in each of the morning and afternoon sessions. Children may attend the morning or afternoon session, Monday to Friday, or take up a 30-hours' government-funded or 30-hours' self funded place (please see the relevant year's Admissions Policy for details of the 30-hours places). The morning session starts at 8.45am and finishes at 11.45am; the afternoon session begins at 12.30pm and ends at 3.30pm. Entry to the Nursery is in the Autumn Term for those who will become four years old in that academic year.
The Nursery is an important part of the school and the children follow a carefully planned Foundation Stage curriculum which contributes towards and promotes children's social, emotional, moral, physical, intellectual, creative and spiritual development and provides a sound foundation for later education. The Nursery children share in some activities with the Main School, such as special assemblies and the celebration of major Church festivals.
Entry to the Nursery is in the Autumn Term for those who will become four years old between 1st September and 31st August. Nursery places are administered separately and parents should be aware that there is no automatic progression from our Nursery into the Main school.
The decision of the Governing Body, delegated to the Headteacher, will be final.
Once Nursery places have been allocated, any late applications after the published closing date will be considered if there is space.
Reception
We admit 60 children into Reception class. The children learn through a range of structured play activities and enjoy being in both the indoor and outdoor areas. As the year progresses the children join the rest of the school for worship and break times.
In-Year Admssion
To discuss applications for admission during the school year (ie, after 1st September), please contact the school office, in the first instance, to enquire about possible vacancies. It will be necessary to complete the St Dunstan's School Supplementary Information Form. You will also need to contact Sutton Admissions to gain further information about potential vacancies and the Sutton In Year Application process (details are available).
