Admission into Reception

Starting school in our Reception classes

• We currently offer 60 places in our Reception classes
• Children are eligible for Reception in the September of the school year in which they turn five years old (the school year runs from 1 September to 31 August)
• Reception admissions are organised centrally by Wandsworth Local Authority
• The criteria for selection are different from those listed on the Nursery admissions page. Having a place in the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the main school

Nursery admissions

We currently offer 34 full time equivalent places. This is made up of 15 full time places and 38 part time places. Our part time offer is 15 hours a week, which is made up of five half days. The morning part-time sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am and the afternoon from 12.15pm to 3.15pm.

We offer full time places to eligible working parents. Non-eligible parents can pay a top-up fee of £70 per week to increase from part-time to full-time hours five days per week.

Admissions criteria
The school will consider applications for the beginning of each academic year for children who have turned 3 prior to 1st September of the academic year in following order:

• Looked after children and those who ceased to be looked after children because they have been adopted, or because they became subject to a residence order, child arrangements order or a special guardianship order.
• Children with a brother or sister currently attending the school and who will still be at the school when the child is admitted.
• Other children in order of straight line distance from home to school as measured by Wandsworth Council's Geographical Information System.

For children who turn three during an academic year –if places are available, pupils may be offered a part-time place in the Nursery in the term after their third birthday. We will have an additional intake in January if space is available.

Admissions criteria
If there are more applications than places within the admissions groups above Chesterton will admit pupils in the priority order (1 to 3) as set out above.

Starting dates for Nursery children
Nursery children have a staggered intake to ensure children settle quickly and have a stress free start to their Early Years education.
Prior to their child starting, families are expected to attend an All about Me meeting with the Nursery teacher.

Appeals resulting from transfer applications for admission to Reception for Wandsworth primary schools for September will be heard at according to the following timetable.

Admission into Years 1 - 6

Admissions of older children
Prospective parents who have moved into the area are invited to make direct contact with the school to arrange a visit and find out more about us. If parents wish to apply for a place they must contact Pupil Services at Wandsworth Council, telephone no. 020 8871 7316, and submit their application direct to them.

Admissions to Secondary Schools
The school will distribute the ‘Guide for Admissions to Secondary School’ to parents of Year 6 children at the start of September and arrange a meeting for parents and children to discuss the process and inform them of key dates for applications.

Open days at secondary schools are held throughout September and the beginning of October and parents are encouraged to attend these events. The completed application forms are to be returned around the middle of October and they must be submitted to Pupil Services at Wandsworth Council. The outcome of the applications are notified in March and appeals generally heard in June.
