Apply for a School Place

If you want to apply for a place in a school, the application process depends on the year group you are applying for.

Before you apply, find your catchment area. We recommend you apply to one of your catchment schools in the first instance.

Apply for a place for children starting in P1 or S1

Admissions for children starting P1 or S1 for the first time are managed by the Schools Transactions team.

Apply for P1

If your child's date of birth is between 1 March and 29 February they are due to start primary school in August.

If you live outside the catchment area of your preferred school you need to make a placing request. You will only receive a place if one is available.

You can apply to defer your child's entry to P1 for a year. Read about deferring entry to P1.

If your child was born after 29 February you can request they start a year early. This is called Early Admission to Primary and is assessed by the Education Resource Group. Learn more about early entry to Primary 1

Section two of the Placing in Schools guide tells you more about applying for P1

Register for P1

Registration for P1 has now closed. If you haven't registered yet or wish to make a new placing request, please contact us.

If you are moving into the City of Edinburgh area you can apply for your new catchment school by filling in the change of address form.

If you have already registered but moving to a new address within the city, you should also fill in the change of address form.

We cannot guarantee a place will be available in one of your catchment schools but we'll do our best to find a place for your child.

Start secondary school

Moving from primary to secondary school

Children in P7 are allocated a place at a secondary school. This place is based on their catchment area if your child is

  • at a City of Edinburgh Council primary school
  • living in the City of Edinburgh Council area.

We sent letters on 8 November to parents of children in P7 confirming the allocated high school for August based on the address held on the school record.

About your child's high school place

The school we allocate is the same denomination as your child's primary school, so if your child attends

  • a non-denominational primary school we allocate your catchment non-denominational high school
  • an RC primary school we allocate your catchment Roman Catholic (RC) high school.

You can ask us to change the allocated catchment school if the other is your first preference.

Places at RC schools are not guaranteed, and we give priority to children who are baptised in the Roman Catholic faith. Where we cannot offer a place, most children are given a place in their non-denominational catchment school.

If you live outside the catchment area of your preferred school you need to make a placing request. You will only receive a place if one is available.

Section three of the Placing in Schools guide tells you more about the procedure for S1 places.

Moving to a new address

If you are moving to a new address before 31 July you need to tell us.

Complete the Change of Address form as soon as you know your new address. You can fill in the form in advance of your move, provided you will be settled in your new address by 31 July.

Please note that we cannot guarantee a place at one of your catchment schools if you apply after 24 December. In these cases we may offer you the nearest school which has a place available.

Section nine of the Placing in Schools guide tells you more about moving address.

Apply for an in-year place or changing schools

Apply directly to the school.

Carefully check if school places are available if you are considering moving house. Where possible, schools reserve places for children moving into the catchment area. However, there is no guarantee of a place at your catchment school.

Please download the request form, complete and return it to your preferred catchment school.

You may also request a school outside your catchment area. This will only be granted if there is a place available.

Once you have applied

  • You will receive a letter with the decision as soon as possible. Please allow extra time to account for school holidays.
  • If we don't grant your request your child will go on a waiting list. We prioritise waiting lists based on when we received your request.
  • If your catchment school is full they place you on its waiting list. You must contact other schools to find a place.
