Arrangements for Primary Schools Admission
In accordance with the School Standards and Framework Act Birmingham Authority has determined its relevant area as that contained within the City of Birmingham.
Children must, by law, start school at the beginning of the term after their fifth birthday. However, at present in Birmingham, children are admitted in September at the start of the academic year in which they reach five years of age, or later if their parents so wish.
Parents have the right to express a preference for the Primary School which they wish their child to attend and it is the Authority’s Policy to meet their wishes as far as possible. The Local Authority has responsibility for the allocation of Reception places and throughout the school.
In some cases this may not be possible because there are too many children for the places available. When this happens, it is intended that places will be offered in the following order of priority:
From last few years, In-Year admissions have been the responsibility of individual schools. Admission to a Nursery School or nursery class does not give the child an extra right to transfer at the age of five to the Primary School to which the nursery is linked or attached.
