Open to all nationalities at pre-university level
UWC Adriatic is open to students of all nationalities who are looking for a pre-university education in a multi-cultural, values-based environment.
Students are selected to the United World Colleges through a network of National Committees across the world on the basis of personal merit and potential. Race, gender, religion, politics and ability to pay are irrelevant in the selection process. The majority of students attend UWC with varying levels of scholarship support, depending on their personal need. The National Committees allocate these as part of the selection process.
UWC Adriatic scholarships are provided by: the Italian Government, Italian Regions, UWC National Committees, UWC alumni and by corporate and private donors.
A suitable applicant is generally a bright 16 or 17 year-old who is doing well academically and has a good range of interests. Important attributes include the ability to mix with others and to be tolerant of fundamentally different opinions and attitudes. Experience has shown that successful students are those who come with a clear awareness of our values and a strong personal commitment to contribute to them. The College provides an environment in which students who are socially mature and morally responsible can thrive and fulfill their potential.
Italian Applicants
Italian students applying for the selection procedure that meet the requirements of the Bando di concorso (call for applications) are invited to the interregional pre-selections in the city nearest their home. The pre-selections are organised in convenient locations throughout Italy; they are usually held in Rome, Milan, Cagliari, and Duino, but this may change according to the number of applications received and their geographical distribution.
Although the exact number varies, approximately 500 students apply for Italian selections each year. Those who qualify (roughly 60 candidates) are then invited to take part in the final phase of the selection procedure, the national selection, held in Duino.
The selections consist of a written test (including exercises focused on linguistic aptitude, mathematics, and general knowledge), group activities (discussions, role play, workshops) and an individual interview. All activities are aimed at evaluating candidates' general knowledge, personality, motivation, interests, skills, and alignment with the UWC values.
In each part of the selection, percentage points are awarded to candidates according to their performance. The scholarships are then distributed on the basis of the overall score accumulated by each candidate.
Although lessons at all UWC schools and colleges are held in English and previous knowledge of the language is an advantage, fluency is not a requirement for the selection. It is expected that scholarship winners not fluent in English study over the summer before beginning their first year. Once living in the college environment, motivated students generally make rapid progress.
Foreign Applicants
Foreign applicants residing in Italy
Students who do not have Italian citizenship may participate in the Italian selections (selections organised by the Italian National Committee) if they reside in Italy and have attended a legally-recognised Italian secondary school for at least two years. They must also fulfill the requirements of the Bando di Concorso (call for applications). Selections are held in Italian and the call for applications generally goes out in autumn each year with a deadline set for November.
Foreign applicants residing outside Italy
Non-Italian students residing outside of Italy must apply through the UWC National Committee of their home country.
Children of staff members
The children of staff members aged 16-19 can attend UWC Adriatic as non-residential students and sit for the IB exams at the end of their two years at the College. Please note that there will be a selection process.
Selection Procedures
The application process varies across countries to ensure that it is applicable and relevant to the local culture and education system. The National Committee of your country will be looking for students who have the potential to benefit from a UWC experience.
