Al Wataniya International School - AWIS

  • Founded: 2014
  • Address: Dohat Al Khaima Street - Doha, Qatar (Map)
  • Tel: Show Number

We accept admissions applications year-round. Spaces are extremely limited, so you are encouraged to apply early.

AWIS is an international school that welcomes admissions applications from all cultures and academic abilities.

The school does not set out to be academically selective, so has no minimum entry requirements as such. All applicants are assessed in a manner appropriate to their age to ensure they are ready for school, will benefit from (and contribute to) the learning environment we offer, and can be fitted in to a class appropriate to their stage of development.

We accept children from 3 to 11 years of age. Typically, we have more applicants than we have available spaces, so you are encouraged to apply early. Where possible, we give preference to siblings of existing students and applicants from our related nursery school in Ain Khalid - Acorn Nursery.

We have staff on the Admissions Team who speak Arabic, so feel free to contact them if you require any assistance understanding the process.

If you are ready to add your child's details to our Waiting List, then register now by completing our online Expression of Interest Form.

Requirements

Schools in Qatar are regulated by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, who impose certain rules on all schools regarding student admissions and the data that must be collected and shared with them.

Applying To AWIS

At the time of application, all we require is the completed online Expression of Interest Form.

This gives us sufficient information to begin the application process. Your child's details and contact information are entered in to our admissions system, and with this, we can commence the application process.

New To Qatar

At the time of application, we try to be as flexible as possible with parents. This is especially true of parents who are still planning their move to Qatar, or have only recently arrived.

We do take into accounts people's special circumstances, and are happy to advise on securing a school place. Feel free to contact us if you have concerns.

We are often able to assess and make a firm offer of a school place, even if your child then has to wait for all the required paperwork (see below) before they can start school.

Starting At AWIS

Prior to your child starting, we require that you complete our Application Form in full - see download button below. This provides us with some important additional information, including details of all parents / guardians, health records, and whether they can appear on social media.

Please sign the completed Application Form and submit it to the School Office, together with all the required supporting documents.

Required Documents

We are required by the authorities in Qatar to have copies of all the following documents on file, before your child starts:

  • Student's Qatar ID - see note 1 below.
  • Student's passport.
  • Father's Qatar ID.
  • Student's birth certificate.
  • Student's immunisation record.
  • Letter of employment from student's sponsor's workplace.
  • Most recent school report - see note 2 below.
  • Fully completed and signed Application Form.

Note 1: Valid Qatar ID Requires
Parents new to Qatar should be aware that it is against Ministry regulations for any school to register a student who does not have a valid Qatar ID. You need to allow time from arriving in the country for the father (normally the father, but could be the wife) to complete residency proceedings before he can begin the process of applying for residency for the rest of the family. This process can take a considerable amount of time, during which the children are unable to attend school.

If you are moving to Qatar, we recommend you take advice from your employer about timescales, as the length of time taken to complete residency for the whole family varies substantially depending upon circumstances.

Note 2: Attestation of School Reports
There is a new requirement for students joining the school in Year 2 or above. If joining us from outside Qatar (rather than transferring schools within the country), the previous school report now has to be attested (ie stamped) by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Qatar Embassy in the country you are coming from, then attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar.

Application Process

  • The essential first step is to register with us by completing our online Expression of Interest Form
  • We accept student applications throughout the year.
  • Our busiest student intake time is January to April, which is when the bulk of the intake for the following academic year is processed.

Complete Expression Of Interest

This is a short online form to give us the basic details for you and your child. It ensures you will be contacted by our Admissions Team when we next have an Open Day or run some new student Assessments.

Please note that the time between completing the form and being called for assessment varies enormously, depending upon the time of year and whether we expect to have vacancies in the year group you are applying for.

Student Assessment

You will be invited to bring your child for assessment. You will usually also have the opportunity to tour the school at the same time, if you have not already done so.

The QR500 Application and Assessment Fee is payable at this time.

More details of the assessment process can be found.

Assessment Result

All assessment results are sent by email to parents. You can expect to receive this within 2 to 3 working days of sitting the assessment.

The result will typically be one of the following:

  • Firm offer of a place in school, with a confirmed class and start date
  • Successful outcome in the assessment, but remaining on the waiting list until a firm offer of a start date can be confirmed. Note we do not assess students unless there is a realistic prospect of a place becoming available, but it can take time to establish the exact number of vacancies we have available.
  • A regret that we are unable to offer a place.

Acceptance Of Offer

Where a place is offered, the offer is valid for one week. If it is not accepted within that time the offer lapses so that we can accept the next person of our waiting list.

To accept the offer of a place, parents are required to pay the Registration Fee to guarantee their child's place.

Before Starting

An AWIS Application Form must be fully completed, signed and submitted to the School Office before a child can be allowed to commence school.

More detailed information on the supporting documentation that needs to be provided with the Application Form can be found on our Admission Requirements page.

Assessment

AWIS is an international school that welcomes applicants from all cultures and academic abilities. The school does not set out to be academically selective so has no minimum entry requirements as such. All applicants are assessed in a manner appropriate to their age to ensure they are ready for school, will benefit from (and contribute to) the learning environment we offer, and can be fitted in to a class appropriate to their stage of development.

Foundation Stage

For students entering Foundation Stage (3 and 4 year olds) , we are looking for sufficient social skills and maturity to be ready to leave the home environment and enter formal schooling.

Teachers will sit with the child, chat to them, and observe them undertake some simple tasks. We are looking for the ability to separate from parents, follow simple instructions, and interact with others.

Primary Students

For students entering the school in higher year groups, we are assessing their existing abilities in English (spoken and written) and Mathematics, as well as their social skills.

There is no pass or fail cut-off, but we have to ensure students are placed in a cohort appropriate to their needs or, in certain cases, are provided with the additional support after joining the school to close any gaps identified in their skills.

Expectations

We emphasise that we have high expectations of all our students. Given their young age, this places a corresponding obligation on their parents to model exemplary behaviour and partner with the school to nurture the development of these young people.

With that in mind, the admissions process is designed to look for the following traits in applicants:

  • Eagerness to learn. With the right attitude and determination, any student can achieve.
  • Rounded education. We are looking for students willing to work hard and contribute to all aspects of school life, including academic, sporting, cultural and social.
  • Teamwork. Our curriculum emphasises collaborative learning, a skill that research has shown to be essential for future success.
