We are delighted you are interested in joining the Melbourne Grammar School community. We look forward to welcoming your child into our School. Melbourne Grammar School has a rich history of success and achievement. However, it is our values and the quality of the human relationships within our School that define us. We aim to guide our students to become productive, responsible and caring global citizens of the future who are conscious of their responsibility to society and have the capacity to make a real contribution to it.

Admissions Procedures

An overview of our Admissions procedures is provided below. Further details are available in the Student Admission document.

Families interested in securing boarding, Indigenous bursary or international student places should contact the Admissions Office to discuss admissions procedures as these vary from the standard process (as below).

Step one: Application

Applications are accepted from birth.

When applying, you will be asked to:

  • supply a copy of your child’s birth certificate, passport or equivalent
  • pay an application fee
  • agree to the Conditions of Entry to the School.

Step two: Offer

The School normally offers places to students around 18 months prior to commencement.

The School takes a range of criteria into account when making offers of places to students because we consider it important to have an appropriately balanced School community. Information about our criteria is available in the Student Admission document.

Specific selection criteria apply at various year levels. For example, students entering Years 7 – 12 are normally asked to sit an entrance examination or assessment test prior to an offer being made. There are additional requirements for International and Indigenous Bursary applicants.

If your child is not initially offered a place, we will let you know and, subject to your advice, place them on a waiting list. As places become available, we offer them to children on the waiting list, subject to our admissions criteria.

Step three: Acceptance and confirmation

To secure a place which has been offered at Melbourne Grammar School, families must accept and pay an enrolment fee by a specified date (normally two weeks after the offer is made).

The enrolment fee is non-refundable and not transferable. It is not credited towards future tuition. We may contact families immediately prior to commencement to confirm their intention to start.

Step four: Commencement

We seek to ensure all students have a successful and positive transition to Melbourne Grammar School. We offer orientation programmes tailored to the year of entry.

Enrolment Intakes

Our main entry points for new students are Prep and Year 7. We also offer a small intake at Year 3 and additional places at Year 9, with places occasionally available at other year levels.

We enrol a relatively even mix of boys and girls into Prep to Year 6 at our primary school – Grimwade House – in Caulfield. At the end of Year 6, boys move on to secondary education at our middle school Wadhurst and (then) Senior School campuses in South Yarra, while girls continue their secondary education at a school of their choosing. We provide strong orientation and transition programmes for students entering the School, and for girls departing at the end of Year 6.

Places for Day Students and Boarders

We offer places for day girls and boys from Prep to Year 6 and both day and boarding boys from Years 7 to 12. Our boarding precinct is a close-knit family of boys from regional Victoria, across Australia and overseas.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Our scholarships seek to recognise the talents of very able students. Bursaries provide additional opportunities for students who may not otherwise be able to attend the School. We welcome your enquiries about our School and application process.

Entry Points

Our main entry points for new students are Prep and Year 7. We also offer small intakes at Year 3 and at Year 9, with places occasionally available at other year levels.

Families interested in securing boarding, Indigenous bursary or international student places should contact the Admissions Office to confirm availability and discuss admissions procedures.

Prep intake

Prep is the main intake at Grimwade House.

Children must attend an interview with the Head of Grimwade House or the Head of Junior Primary before they commence at Melbourne Grammar School. This is held mid-way through the pre-Prep year to determine the child’s readiness for school. In some cases, we may recommend an additional year of pre-Prep.

Year 3 intake

We offer a small number of Year 3 places to children on the waiting list.

Offers are dependent on:

  • review of school reports
  • a meeting with the Head of Grimwade House or delegate.

Other years

If your child is on the waiting list, we may contact you if a place becomes available. Offers are dependent on:

  • review of school reports
  • a meeting with the Head of Grimwade House or delegate.

Year 7

This is Melbourne Grammar School’s major secondary school-level intake.

Offers are dependent on, but not limited to:

  • an entrance test held in Year 5 (by invitation, based on certain criteria)
  • the student’s latest school report and details of his co-curricular activities and hobbies.

Year 8

If your son is on the waiting list, we may contact you if a place becomes available. Offers are dependent on the same criteria as Year 7, as well as an interview with the Head of Wadhurst or delegate.

Year 9

We enrol approximately 30 new boys in to Year 9 each year.

Offers are dependent on:

  • admissions criteria
  • an assessment test held in Year 8 (by invitation, based on certain criteria)
  • the student’s latest school report and details of his co-curricular activities and hobbies
  • a meeting with the Head of Senior School or delegate.

Years 10 to 12

If your son is on the waiting list, we may contact you if a place becomes available. Offers are dependent on the same process as Year 9, as well as an interview with the Head of Senior School or delegate.

If considering entering in Year 11, we request you contact the Admissions Office before submitting an application.
