Admissions Criteria

TIS accepts students into a grade in accordance with their age. The birthday cut-off date at TIS is August 31st. Students are admitted into classes strictly according to the cut-off dates below, regardless of English ability. Any exceptions will be made at the discretion of the Head of School.

In the Admissions process, the following criteria are carefully considered

  • Space availability
  • English language ability
  • Balance of languages, genders and academic strengths in a class
  • Physical and social maturity, especially for younger children
  • Suitability of the school’s educational program for the prospective student
  • Previous schooling records / reports and whether the child is within our range of academic requirements
  • At least one parent is required to communicate in English without the help of a translator
  • Siblings of currently enrolled students are given priority when all other entrance criteria are met

Class

  • Maximum of 20 students in each classroom
  • Maximum of 25% of students who share a language other than English per class

English as an Additional Language Support (EAL)

  • Kindergarten students are not eligible for EAL support
  • Gr 1 - Gr 4 EAL support available for max 3 students / class
  • Gr 5 EAL Support is available for students with limited English on a case-by-case basis
  • Middle Years Program (MYP) students are expected to be proficient in English as only minimal support is available
  • EAL takes place in lieu of Japanese lessons until teachers deem the student eligible to begin Japanese
  • Japanese native speakers are required to speak, understand, read and write English at grade level

School Information Tours

Application Timeline

  • Applications for admission can be accepted within one year prior to the date of entry
  • Overseas students may be admitted anytime throughout the year, based on space availability and other criteria
  • Students may not transfer between other international schools in Tokyo during the school year

Application Checklist

  • Completed online application form
  • Proof of birth (Passport or birth certificate)
  • Recent family photo (No sunglasses and no masks please)
  • Individual photo of applicant (Smiling headshot - may be used for TIS student ID in the future)
    • Color photo (Think passport photo with a smile)
    • White or neutral background
    • File size at least 1 Mb
    • File Name: Please name the file with full name (Grade_First_Last)
    • No sunglasses, mask, or cap
    • JPEG file
  • Application fee of *30,000 yen (Non-refundable)

For Kindergarten Applications

  • 2 years of school reports (all terms), if available
    • If reports are not in English, originals as well as translations must be provided
  • Kindergarten Confidential Reference Form (KCRF), filled out by a teacher via our online system
  • KCRF will be available in the checklist on the online system after the online application has been submitted and payment has been made
  • Reference can be requested in Japanese and directly returned to Admissions by email/ post
  • Any psycho-educational evaluation, only if applicable

For Grade 1 to Grade 10 Applications

  • 2 years of school reports (all terms), including most recent reports
  • If reports are not in English, originals as well as translations must be provided
  • Standardized tests, if available
  • 2 Confidential Reference Forms (CRF), filled out by teachers who know the student well via our online system
  • For Middle Years Program (MYP) applicants, English and Math teacher references are preferred
  • CRF will be available in the checklist on the online system after the online application has been submitted and payment has been made
  • References can be requested in Japanese and directly returned to Admissions by email/ post
  • Any psycho-educational evaluation, only if applicable

Assessment

At the discretion of TIS, once the application file is completed and a space becomes available, a screening test may be required to supplement the information in the application file.

For Kindergarten, group screenings are organized each year around January in preparation for the following school year. Candidates applying after the group screenings may be assessed if space remains available.

*Results of any assessment at TIS will not be made available for the applicant’s review. Nor is TIS obliged to share details of admissions decisions. Admissions decisions made by our Leadership Team are final.

Enrollment

Confirmation of student acceptance to TIS will be made after

  • The completed application and supporting documents have been fully reviewed
  • Applicant fits entrance criteria
  • An opening is available in the appropriate grade
  • Possible online interview / screenings
