Graduate Degrees

The following guide provides all the information you need to apply for acceptance into either a graduate-degree program or master's certificate program.

Patten University admits qualified students of any race, color, religion, sex, age national and ethnic origin to all programs and activities generally accorded or made available to the University's student body. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, marital status, or national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, and other school programs.

Graduate Degree Admission Requirements

Prerequisites

To be admitted into a degree program, you must hold a Bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education. Three years work experience is recommended but not required.

​Applicants with previous education in a foreign country, who do not reside in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand must demonstrate English language proficiency. A minimum score of 530 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT) or 71 on the Internet Based Test (iBT), or 6.5 on the International English Language Test (IELTS) or 50 on the PTE Academic Score Report is required.

​An applicant who has completed university-level courses in a foreign country comparable to course credits in the american university system must have their educational credentials evaluated and sent to Patten University. The credit evaluation report must also include the original transcript. If the transcript is not in English a translation must be provided. Three credible providers of credential evaluations are:

World Education Services (WES – http://www.wes.org/)
Educational Credentials Evaluators, Inc. (ECE – http://www.ece.org/)
International Education Research Foundation (IERF – http://www.ierf.org/).

Evaluations from other credible sources will also be accepted.

​Advance Standing (Transfer Credit)

​Students may receive advanced standing or transfer credit for courses taken in other recognized public, private, or Government educational institutions. Approval for specific courses will be established individually on the basis of breadth, scope, organization, and quality of work offered in relationship to the courses required by the Patten University. Under California law, no more than six semester units (two courses) will be accepted for advanced standing into the Master's degree programs and no more than nine semester credits (three courses) in the MBA programs. Certficate students only receive three semester credits (one course) in advanced standing. Provisions are made for challenging a maximum of two additional courses. Requests for advanced standing must be accompanied by objective evidence of the quality of the courses offered, including (1) name of sponsoring organization, 2) text material used, (3) course outline, (4) proof that the student has taken the course, and (5) grade attained. No credit can be given for seminars or conferences.

​Course Challenge (Testing Out)

​Students enrolled in one of the degree programs who have received advanced standing (transfer credit) for two or three courses, but have taken additional similar courses in a graduate or government institution may challenge (test out) up to two courses. Certificate students may not challenge courses. Students must receive prior approval from the Admissions Department before requesting a challenge exam.

​In order to receive credit through a challenge, students must pass the final examination for the course with a score of 80% or above. The completed examination must be returned within 45 days.

​There is a $325 fee charged per challenge. Students who do not receive a score of 80% or above on the challenge examination will be required to register for the course. The $325 challenge fee will be deducted from the $975 tuition.

​Application Instructions

You must submit the following to the Admissions Office by mail, fax, or email:

  • A completed application for admission. You may apply online or download an application and mail the completed application and $50 nonrefundable application fee to Patten University.
  • An official transcript from the college or university from which you received your diploma. To be considered official, transcripts must come directly from the institution. Upon receipt of your application the Admissions Department will send you an email message with a transcript request form. Use this form to send for your official transcript.
  • A photo ID which includes your home address must be submitted. The photo ID will only be used to verify identity throughout the program.
  • Applicants are required to complete a short distance education survey measuring their familiarity with the technology and personal skills related to distance education. The link for this survey is sent to the applicant following submission of the application.

​Application Deadline

Once we receive your application form, you have 90 days to provide all the other required documentation. If you anticipate that you will be unable to do so, then please contact the Admissions Department for an extension.

​​Admission Decision

Upon receipt of the Application for Admission and all necessary documentation, the Office of Admissions will send you prompt, written notification of the admission decision.

​First Course Registration

A newly accepted student at Patten must enroll in their first class within 90 days of acceptance. A student is subject to dismissal from the University for Unsatisfactory Academic Progress if they do not meet this deadline. However, if a student is unable to register within that time period due to tuition assistance funding restrictions this requirement can be waived.

​Taking Courses Prior to Admission

You are encouraged to register for your first course while you are completing the application process. Refer to the curriculum path suggested for your program to select the first course. If you intend to apply for advanced standing, an Admissions Counselor can recommend which course to take first.

​Applicants who will use their Veterans Administration benefits may not register until they have received their formal acceptance from Patten University.

​Technology Requirements

​In order to fulfill the requirements of the Patten course curriculum all students are expected to have access to a personal computer, an email account, a word-processor software program such as the Microsoft Office Suite, and a web-browser such as Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari.

Transfer Credit​

Advanced Standing (Transfer Credit)

​Students may secure recognition for work done at other recognized public, private, or Government educational institutions. Approval for specific courses will be established individually on the basis of the breadth, scope, organization, and quality of work offered in relationship to the courses required by the Patten University.

No more than six semester credits (two courses) will be accepted for advanced standing in the Master’s degree programs, and no more than nine semester credits (three courses) in the MBA programs. Certificate students may only receive three semester credits (one course) in advanced standing. Patten does not award credit for prior experiential learning.

An advanced standing request form is included with the application confirmation sent after receipt of an application. Applicants who wish to request advanced standing must submit the form to the Director of Admissions and Student Achievement (laurie@patten.edu) accompanied by the documentation of course completion in the form of a graduate transcript, or in the case of Government courses, a course completion certificate. Graduate transcripts must be official and must come directly from the institution. Requests for advanced standing for courses taken in another graduate program should also include information documenting the similarity to the Patten course, including course description, syllabi, text material used, and a course outline. A grade of “B” or above is required. Advanced standing will not be denied solely on the source of accreditation of the sending institution.

Transcripts from non-U.S. institutions must be evaluated by an appropriate third party and translated into English.

No fees are charged for advanced standing evaluation, nor are any fees charged for granting advanced standing. Upon acceptance into the program the applicant’s approved credit for advanced standing will be added to their Patten transcript.

If an applicant’s request for advanced standing is denied, they may appeal the decision to the Patten Chief Academic Officer (nate@patten.edu). The appeal should include the name of the Patten course, the name of the institution, the previous course taken, and a detailed explanation, with supporting material, of why the applicant believes the course taken at another institution is similar in content to the Patten course.

Notice Regarding Transferability of Credits and Credentials Earned at our Institution

The transferability of credits you earn at Patten University is at the complete discretion of an institution to which you may seek to transfer. Acceptance of the certificate or degree you earn is also at the complete discretion of the institution to which you may seek to transfer. If the credits, certificate or degree that you earn at Patten are not accepted at the institution to which you seek to transfer, you may be required to repeat some or all of your coursework at that institution. For this reason you should make certain that your attendance at Patten will meet your educational goals. This may include contacting an institution to which you may seek to transfer after attending Patten University to determine if your credits, certificate or degree will transfer.
