An outstanding education for boys and girls aged 13 to 18.
Inclusivity sits at the heart of life at Charterhouse and each year we welcome children from all educational backgrounds, including international schools, grammar schools and state schools.
The majority of children join us from a wide range of UK prep schools, either as a boarder or a day pupil.
Charterhouse is an academically selective school and admission is by competitive assessment, interview, and subject to a reference from a candidate’s current school.
Step 1: Registration
Children should be registered for Charterhouse by 30 September, when they are in their Year 6. To register for Charterhouse, parents need to complete the registration form and pay a non-refundable registration fee to secure a place for their child on the list for their year of entry.
Step 2: The ISEB Common Pre-Test
All registered candidates sit the ISEB Common Pre-test to Charterhouse in the Autumn Term of their Year 6. This is an age-standardised series of on-line tests in Mathematics, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The results are reviewed in conjunction with a reference from their current School. Successful applicants will be invited to an Interview and Activities Assessment Day at Charterhouse in the Spring Term of Year 6.
Step 3: Interview & Activities Assessment at Charterhouse
The Assessment at Charterhouse has been carefully designed with the primary goal of getting to know our prospective pupils. We achieve this through a mix of engaging group activities, friendly interviews, and interesting written assessments with an aim to uncover the diverse talents that each student possesses. The written assessment includes creativity, comprehension, and logical puzzles, all intended to bring out the best in our candidates.
Step 4: Results
Following the Interview and Activities Assessments, we communicate our offers to all families in the March of Year 6. For the families who receive an offer of a place, we ask for them to confirm the offer by signing our Acceptance Form and paying a non-refundable deposit by the November of the child's Year 7 (at the latest).
These offers are conditional upon a positive reference of performance and behaviour from their current school when they move into their Year 8.
We extend a warm welcome to all our new families joining Charterhouse to participate in a series of special events. These gatherings are dedicated to welcoming them into our community and to provide opportunities for their children to meet and interact with the other children who will be embarking on their educational journey alongside them.
We reserve about 35% of our places for assessment in Year 7. This is for children who have just missed out on places in Year 6 and also for those who registered too late to be assessed in Year 6. These children sit the ISEB Common Pre-test in the Autumn Term of Year 7 and shortlisted candidates are invited for interview and an Activity Afternoon in the Spring Term.
Places at Charterhouse will be offered to candidates who are successful in this process.
Overseas Entry for Years 9 & 10
Charterhouse warmly welcomes children from all over the world.
Charterhouse is an academically selective school and admission is by competitive assessment, interview, and subject to a reference from a candidate’s current school.
Each year we will welcome around 50 new pupils into the Sixth Form (known as 'Specialists') to study either the A level or IBDP curriculum as a boarder or as a day pupil. Applicants are asked to stipulate their choice in their application.
Competition for places is strong. As a guide, we would expect successful candidates to gain a high proportion of 8s and 9s at (I)GCSE or equivalent. Although our offers will be unconditional, subject choice for A Levels or at higher level in the IBDP will be dependent on certain grades achieved at (I)GCSE (or equivalent).
We welcome candidates with particular interests and talents in art, drama, music, sport and many other fields.
Application
We invite all candidates to complete an application form in the first instance. The application must include copies of latest school reports, together with predicted grades at (I)GCSE. Candidates for whom English is not their first language must submit and include a UKiset test. The application form asks candidates to describe their motivation and ambition to study at Charterhouse and their contribution to the school community.
Candidates from Hong Kong and Mainland China should contact Ms Battie Fung, Academic Asia, 14/F, China Taiping Tower Phase II, 8 Sunning Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong Tel:+852 2833 0919 | Fax:+852 2834 5398 | www.academic-asia.com | Email: battie@academic-asia.com
The Director of Admissions will review all completed applications and after this shortlisted applicants will be invited to complete the registration form and submit the non-refundable registration fee of £300. These candidates will be invited to sit the Sixth Form entrance assessments (which includes examination and interview) in November. Please see the full process below.
Candidates will be notified if they are shortlisted between 1 June and 9 October
Shortlisted Candidates
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to register and complete the registration form and pay the £300.00 registration fee. This form will be emailed to you.
We request confidential references from candidates’ schools. We will request these in early October. If a candidate has been at their current school for less than a year, we also request a reference from the previous school.
Assessment Day and Results
The assessment day at Charterhouse is on a Saturday in the early part of November (Year 11). All candidates sit the Charterhouse Standard Test in English and then choose three further subject papers in subjects that they are looking to study at A Level or at Higher Level in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Candidates are interviewed by a senior member of staff.
If a candidate is studying overseas and unable to come to Charterhouse for the assessments, we can arrange for the tests to be sent to the British Council or the candidate’s current school. Candidates who are successful in the exams will then be invited to an interview (on Zoom).
For candidates in Hong Kong and Mainland China, Academic Asia will hold an assessment day in Hong Kong in November. Please contact Ms Fung for more information.
Candidates who are successful in the tests and interview will be offered unconditional places on 1 December. Parents will be asked to secure the place by signing an acceptance form and paying a deposit. Some reserve offers may also be made.
