Everyone at Eton works hard to create an exciting, stimulating and caring environment, to enable each boy to reach his full potential. All our boys are also expected to make their own contribution to school life.
To achieve this we have developed an admissions process which looks at a boy’s current and potential academic ability as well as whether he will be happy in our boarding environment. Every year we typically welcome boys from about 120 different state and independent schools.
The best thing about Eton is that it allows you to become who you want to be. It brings out what your passions are and it gives you the chance to try anything that you think you will be good at.
A boy may be registered up until 30 June of the school year he turns 10 (UK school Year 5). After this the only route of entry will be through scholarships or Sixth Form entry, which open in Year 8 (for Year 9 entry) and Year 11 (for Sixth Form entry).
Eton is committed to supporting boys with disabilities and also has a Learning Support Centre for boys with special educational needs and disabilities.
Foremost among the many factors which contribute to pupils’ excellent progress and very high standards is the high quality of the teaching they receive. There are around 1,350 boys at the school. In academic year, 20% of boys received financial support towards their fees (averaging a 71% award), with 100 boys paying no fees at all. For academic year £9.4 million has been budgeted for Financial Aid, with 107 boys paying no fees at all. Regrettably, it is still not possible to support all of the applications.
Good luck with your application.
A boy can be registered at any time up to 30 June in UK School Year 5 (the UK academic year in which he reaches the age of 10 years), for example:
These are strict deadlines unless a boy is specifically applying for the King’s Scholarship or Music Awards, for which eligible boys can apply in UK School Year 8 up to the age of 13.
Please complete the online registration form
As part of the registration, you will need to upload a copy of the boy’s unabridged birth certificate (showing parental details; this is titled ‘Certified Copy of an Entry’ on a UK certificate) and pay the non-refundable registration fee (currently £400, but subject to change).
Please note we cannot process incomplete applications and reserve the right to discard them after a month. All applications for registration must be complete and received by the deadline.
Post-Assessment
We will offer boys who are successful at Stage 2 a Conditional Place, confirmed by passing King’s Scholarship, Common Entrance or Eton Entrance examinations at age 12/13 in UK School Year 8.
Parents and boys with a Conditional Place meet a selection of House Masters with a view to finding a suitable boarding house during the first and second terms of UK School Year 7.
Parents wishing to accept a Conditional Place offer will be required to pay the Acceptance Fee by the end of March in UK School Year 7.
We will also offer some boys a Waiting List Place and, if they accept, invite them to come back to Eton in the Summer term of UK School Year 7 for a further assessment. Each year we accept a number of boys on the Waiting List into the school; the number varies from year to year.
Admission to Eton at age 16 is possible for a small number of candidates, either through the Orwell Award (for boys in UK state schools) or Sixth Form entry (fee-paying). Applicants should be of a high academic standard (ideally gaining a minimum of six GCSEs at Grade 7 or overseas equivalent) who are also likely to make a notable contribution to school life in sport or in the arts.Entry for both of these routes opens in the summer before a boy starts UK School Year 11, with applications from mid-July. The application deadline is usually in mid-September when a boy is in UK School Year 11. Please see the application form for each year’s specific dates
All applications received will be considered and we will then shortlist boys to be invited to Eton for an assessment in November or December.
Registration for Fee-Paying Places
Boys who are studying at a UK independent school, state school, or overseas school may apply for Sixth Form Entry.
Any available places will be offered to boys of a high academic standard who are also likely to make a notable contribution to school life in sport or in the arts. The minimum qualifying standard is six GCSEs (or overseas equivalent) at grade 7, but in practical terms the level is likely to be significantly higher and competition for the limited number of places is intense.
