Greetings from the Admissions Office. Though we are the beginning of every Gow journey, we know we are probably not the beginning of yours. Most families come to us after an arduous quest they didn’t plan on. We re-launch them on a new adventure, one that’s straighter and shorter, enables them to rethink what learning can be, and leads them where they want to go and where they didn’t realize they could.
Our aim is to determine if a student can benefit from Gow’s curriculum and environment, structured to fit the needs of students with diagnosed language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia. For those who can benefit, real change starts fast and lasts long—through college and career. For many, Gow is the first school where they’re on a level playing field with their peers and fully supported by their teachers, who teach as if their students’ futures depend on it. Together we are Gow United.
Where there is a good fit between student and school, magic happens—in class, on the field, and in the dorm. To determine if the fit is right, we’ll need to see diagnostic testing, school transcripts, recommendations, and a personal interview, just as you’ll want to see our beautiful Western New York campus and the people who provide its spark. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. First, let’s talk.
Admission to The Gow School is a two-way street. While prospective families learn about us, we learn about prospective students and their particular needs and goals. Our mutual purpose is to discover if Gow can help them attain those goals and reignite their lives, as we have for generations of graduates.
The Gow School is currently accepting coed boarding and day students in grades 6–12. We encourage interested families to get a feel for the school from our website, social media, and viewbook and to talk with our Director of Admissions so that we can begin to determine if Gow is the right learning environment for them. Submission of an assessment and test results and the Application Packet provides clarification. Where a good fit seems likely, we invite families to visit our beautiful campus and meet our united community, after which an admissions decision is made.
STEP 1
After exploring our website, social media, and viewbook, complete the online inquiry form requesting admissions material to be sent to you
STEP 2
Mail a full report of a Psychoeducational Evaluation conducted within the last three years. The report should include all composite and subtest scores (standard scores and percentile ranks) for a comprehensive test of cognitive abilities e.g., Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V), Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV), or Woodcock-Johnson IV Normative Update (WJ IV NU) Tests of Cognitive Abilities. AND a test of achievement skills e.g., Woodcock-Johnson IV Normative Update (NU) Tests of Achievement or Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III)
STEP 3
Submit the Application packet with the $100 application fee. Decisions are made on a rolling basis, but enrollment may be limited by grade. A few additional steps are necessary for international students before matriculation. Families wishing to apply for financial aid should complete the application process as early as possible.
STEP 4
At this time we are scheduling virtual Admissions visits via Skype. While this is still a required part of the Admissions process, we are committed to getting to know each and every student and family that is looking to become a part of the Gow community.
Students from across the globe add to The Gow School’s diverse community of united LD students. Approximately one-third of our students are international. In addition to Gow's language remediation, some students for whom English was not their first language benefit from additional support for English Language Learners (ELL).
The Gow School application process for international students is similar to that for domestic students, but there are two additional requirements before matriculation. Those who are not U.S. citizens need a student visa, available from an embassy after tuition is paid and the school issues an I-20. In addition, Gow requires that international students carry health insurance, often available through parents' policies or through ISM Insurance.
