Felsted School

  • Founded: 1564
  • Address: Felsted - Essex, England (Map)
  • Tel: Show Number

We aim to make our admissions process as smooth as possible for our prospective families. Our experienced Admissions Team are always happy to answer your questions, explain our entrance procedures or arrange a visit.

The main points of entry are at:

  • Age 4 (Reception entry)
  • Age 7 (Year 3 entry)
  • Age 11 (Year 7 entry)
  • Age 13 (Year 9 entry)
  • Age 16 (Year 12 entry)

We also accept applications for other year groups depending on availability.

With high demand for places at Felsted, parents often start enquiring about places for their children several years before entry. We do encourage this as we can offer pre-testing and early confirmation of a place in certain year groups. However, even if you are a late applicant it is worth contacting us as places can become available throughout the year, or we can place your child on our waiting list.

In the first instance, we encourage you to discuss your enquiry with a member of our Admissions Team, who can let you know about arranging a visit and send you relevant information, including a personalised prospectus. As soon as you are ready, please register with us by completing our online Registration Form. You will then be included on our list of applicants for the appropriate year and contacted accordingly for taster days and testing.

Year 9 Entry
We offer 3 entry testing points for Year 9 - when pupils are in Year 6, Year 7 or Year 8. Wherever possible, we would encourage early application to avoid any disappointment.

Pre-testing in Year 6 or Year 7
Year 9 pre-testing is a popular choice for many of our families who are keen to secure their child's Senior School route in good time. Pre-testing usually takes place in February and our model allows pupils to sit entry assessments in either Year 6 or Year 7. Successful candidates are offered an assured place for Year 9 and they will have the opportunity to apply for Scholarship & Award Assessments when they get to Year 8.

We are continually reviewing our admissions processes to ensure a positive experience for candidates and, as a result, we are standardising our entry testing processes across the school. We will now be using an online testing platform called ATOM for our Year 9 pre-testing, along with all other entry points at Felsted.

The online assessments include Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning (VR) and Non Verbal Reasoning (NVR). They are adaptive and require no advance tutoring or preparation. The tests are accessible for SEND candidates and, as always, we will ensure that exam access arrangements are in place if required. Familiarisation exercises, instructions and further information will be provided by the Admissions Office in due course.

Entry testing is, of course, just one element of the admissions process and whilst the test results are an indicator of academic ability, we are keen to get to know every pupil as an individual so that we can be sure they will thrive at Felsted. Candidates attend an interview with a member of the Senior Leadership Team and we also look carefully at school reports and the confidential reference that the current school provides.

Entry Testing in Year 8
For candidates who did not complete pre-testing in Year 6 or Year 7 or who were not offered a place at that time, we offer a further opportunity for entry testing in the October of Year 8. Please note that we may have limited availability of places at this stage and preference may be given to weekly or traditional boarders. Please contact the Admissions Office if you would like to discuss an application before registering.

In September of Year 8, we invite current Felsted pupils and external candidates (who have been offered a place) to apply for a Felsted Scholarship / Mary Skill Award. Assessments for non-academic awards take place in October and Academic Scholarship assessments take place in January.

Year 10 Entry
Subject to availability of places, we accept applications for Year 10 entry and assessments take place in October prior to the year of entry, when pupils are in Year 9. Please note that places may be limited and preference may be given to weekly or traditional boarders. Year 12 (Sixth Form) is the next entry point after Year 10.

International Admissions

International Admissions

Felsted has a long and well-established tradition of educating pupils from all over the world. Our international pupils make a major contribution to the richness and diversity of community life at Felsted and we welcome applications from overseas full boarders from Year 5, as well as relocating families with younger children.

The international intake makes up around 20% of our total pupil body, with a dedicated introductory week held at the beginning of each academic year (called LEAP week) in which our new overseas pupils are introduced to Felsted School Life. This induction gives these pupils a head start before term begins so that they get to know their way around the campus, make strong friendships, meet their key teachers and arrange their uniform. The week also includes some fun cultural trips to London and Cambridge and is a key part of integration into Felsted.

Entrance Requirements and Procedures

Further details regarding the entry procedure can be found below, but there are four steps to follow:

  • First steps: The pupil’s details and documents are to be sent to the International Registrar
  • Registration
  • Entry Testing
  • Visiting Felsted School (Skype interviews can be organised if a visit is not feasible)
