Admissions Procedure

We understand it can be a daunting task choosing the right school for your child and aim to make our Admissions process as easy as possible.

The usual ages of entry are 2+, 4+, 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+. Depending on availability, pupils are welcome to join us at any time of their academic career throughout the school year.

Our friendly Admissions team are always happy to talk you through the admissions process at any stage. They will continue to liaise with you during the process to ensure a smooth entry to The Mount School.

Step 1. Registration
If you feel The Mount School is the right school for your daughter, you will need to complete a Registration Form to set the entry procedure in motion. As well as providing the Admissions Team with relevant information to process your application, filling out the Registration Form allows us to invite you to events and supply you with relevant documentation, such as scholarship and bursary application information. The Registration Form, together with a non-fundable Fee (see Fees) and a copy of your child’s birth certificate, should be returned to our Admissions Department.

Step 2. Taster Days
Taster Days are an excellent chance to experience life at The Mount School. Prospective pupils have the opportunity meet current pupils and staff, try out new lessons and learn about school life. Taster Days can be arranged for any year group at any time of the year. An annual Year 7 and Sixth Form (College) Taster day takes place in November prior to September entry. Pupils registered with The Mount for Year 7 and Sixth Form will automatically be invited to attend these days.

Step 3. Entrance Assessment
The Mount School York requires pupils to sit an Entrance Assessment appropriate to their age. This allows us to make sure that The Mount School is right for your child, that they will benefit from our ethos and curriculum and that they are included in the correct classes should they join. At this stage a reference/report will also be requested from your child’s current school.

Pre School (age 2 – 4 years)
We will invite your child to attend a settling-in session, where an informal assessment will take place. This enables children to familiarise themselves with the Pre-School Room, teachers and other children. If the child is transferring from another Early Years setting, a report will be required in addition to the taster session. At the end of the taster session, the Pre-School Room Leader will give a verbal assessment and on this basis an ‘Offer of Place’ will be made, provided there are spaces available.

Junior School (Reception to Year 6)
Junior School children will be invited to attend a taster day in the Junior School. During the taster day an informal assessment of the child will be made. This assessment will look at the personal and social development of the child as well as his/her academic development. If your child is joining us from another school we will also request a reference from his/her present school. An ‘Offer of Place’ will be made if the report and taster day are both satisfactory.

Senior School (Year 7- Year10)
External entrance examinations and Scholarship Assessments for the Senior School take place in January. Registered pupils are invited to spend the day in the Senior School. The Entrance Examination is taken during the course of the taster day. Prospective pupils will also be interviewed by the Principal or another Senior member of staff. A request for a report from the child’s current Head Teacher will be made at this stage. Pupils who are not able to attend the January entrance exam or who may be joining us at a different time of year will be invited in to School for their own taster day. An ‘Offer of Place’ will be made if the report, taster day and entrance examinations are all satisfactory.

Sixth Form (College)
Girls for entry into Sixth Form (College) are interviewed by the Head of College. A meeting with the Principal is also arranged. Their current Head Teacher is also asked for a report giving predicted GCSE grades. Academic selection is based on the results of GCSE, the minimum standard for external candidates being six subjects at grade B or above (or equivalent). Grade B (or equivalent) is usually required for the subjects studied at A Level with grade A (or equivalent) required for Science and Maths courses.. An ‘Offer of Place’ will be made if the report and interview are both satisfactory.

Step 4. Offer of Place
As soon as possible after the Entrance Assessment and receipt of a reference/report from your child’s current school, you will be notified in writing from the Principal with regards to an ‘Offer of Place.’

Step 5. Acceptance of Place
To finalise the application and formally accept the ‘Offer of Place, you will be asked to sign and return the Acceptance Form along with the corresponding Acceptance . From this point, your son or daughter will have a guaranteed place at The Mount School York.

Joining The Mount School York
We look forward to welcoming all new pupils to The Mount School York. We know that waiting to start a new school is an exciting but daunting time. Our Admissions Team will send out joining information to each new pupil in the June prior to entry (or prior to a pupil’s start date if they are joining mid way through the year). This will include uniform lists, medical forms, music tuition etc. The Admissions Team will also continue to be your first point of contact should you have any further questions regarding your child joining The Mount School.

International Students

The Mount School York has been welcoming students from across the globe since the 1940s. As a Quaker School we are accepting of all pupils from a wide range of cultures and faiths.

We currently have students of 17 different nationalities studying at The Mount.

In recent years we have welcomed students from USA, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Iran, China, Russia, France, Spain, Austria, Mexico, Germany and Turkey. International students join us as both boarding and day students. The Mount School York has a wealth of experience of welcoming students from different cultures to the School. Parents can be assured that we are experts in helping students settle into school life in the UK.

Application
International Students living in the UK can join The Mount School into any Year group, provided they have the correct Visa. Boarding Girls can join The Mount from the age of eleven, students will be allocated into a year group relevant to their age and ability. The Mount welcomes applications for students both directly and via Educational Agents. Applicants whose native language is not English should be reasonably fluent in written and spoken English.

After registering with The Mount School all applicants will need to sit the entrance tests in English and Mathematics, and arrangements can be made for students to take the exams in their own country. We work with a network of educational agents worldwide who can provide this service or we can arrange for the student to sit the tests in their own school. If students are taking GCSE or iGCSE examinations, then we are able to offer places on the basis of a reference from their present school and their predicted grades.

All applicants will be interviewed by The Admissions Manager and the Deputy Principal or Head of College, usually over Skype. This allows The Mount to assess a pupil’s spoken English skills but also allows pupils to ask any questions they may have.

It is at this point that a formal offer of place will be made. Non EU international students will need to apply for a Tier 4 student visa. Our experienced Admissions Team will support families through this application, making the process as quick and as easy as possible.

EAL Lessons
Whilst we expect our pupils to have a basic level of English on their arrival, we have an excellent English as an Additional Language (EAL) department. The EAL department aims to equip pupils with the necessary skills and confidence in the use of English Language to allow them to integrate successfully in the School curriculum. EAL lessons are led by an experienced and highly qualified EAL teacher who is also a Senior English Language Testing System (IELTS) examiner
