General admissions process for all year groups
Taster days and assessments
We welcome pupils for taster days when they can join pupils in their year group, participate in lessons, activities and join them for lunch. This is a valuable opportunity for your child to feel less anxious about a potential school move.
Year 7 entry (11+)
Assessment days are held in late November of Year 6. Pupils sit Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning tests, which are standardised tests to measure ability and attainment. These tests are designed so that pupils do not need to prepare for them, in order to give fair results. In addition, pupils will be asked to complete a writing task and will participate in interactive tasks which will usually include Design and Technology, Science and games. All pupils will have an interview with a senior member of staff and join current pupils for lunch.
All pupils sitting the Year 7 assessments will be automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship based on the results of the tests.
Year 7 key admission dates for entry
Year 3 entry (7+)
Assessments for entry into Year 3 will be held during the Michaelmas (Autumn) term of Year 2. Pupils will be invited to spend the morning with current Year 2 pupils, joining them for lunch in the dining hall before completing a small number of entry tests. The tests will consist of Maths, English and Reasoning.

Registration
If you would like your child to be considered for a place at Hurst Senior School please complete the online Registration Form together with payment of the non refundable registration fee. Pre-entry tests
Registered pupils looking to join Hurst at 13+ (Year 9) will be asked to sit the online ISEB Common Pre-tests in Year 6. These tests are age standardised computer tests which measure ability and attainment and include Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning, Maths and English and are designed so that pupils cannot prepare for them. For more information on these tests please visit the ISEB website.
Pupils usually sit these tests at their Prep School and they will liaise with you about the timing. For pupils who attend non-Common Entrance schools we will arrange for the tests to be completed at Hurst. For pupils who live outside the UK, we will discuss arrangements with individual families.
Offers
On completion of the pre-entry tests, Hurst will discuss the results with the pupil’s current school and look at their academic progress as well as their involvement in extra-curricular activities. Pupils are invited to an assessment and experience day in January/February of Year 6 where they will participate in a carousel of activities which include physical, cerebral and creative tasks and have informal interviews. Based on this information, offers are made by the end of March of Year 6.

If you would like your child to be considered for a place in Hurst’s Sixth Form please complete the online Registration Form together with payment of the non refundable registration fee. This will reserve a place for your child in the year group, but does not guarantee a place.
Please register your child at least 12 to 18 months prior to when you would like them to join.
Entry Requirements
To enrol into the Sixth Form at Hurst students require at least four Grade 7 GCSEs. They should have a 7, 8 or 9 grade in the subjects that they intend to study and, where a student wishes to start a new subject which they have not studied before, they need to have achieved a 7-9 in a GCSE subject closely related to it (i.e. for Economics, ideally a student should have a 7-9 in Maths GCSE). Students should also have a minimum of a Grade 5 at GCSE in Mathematics and English. However, we recognise the need to be flexible and to operate on an individual student basis, working closely with each student on his or her choices, to establish what will be the best programme of study for them. In addition to A-level, we run a BTEC programme in Sport and Extended Project Qualifications. A satisfactory reference is also required from the student’s current school.
Assessments
Registered students are invited to attend assessment days in November of Year 11 when they will sit Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning papers, attend interviews with several members of Sixth Form staff as well as the Headmaster. Students applying for Scholarships will be assessed for these at the same time.
Confidential references, including predicted GCSE grades, will be requested from a student’s current school prior to the assessment days and parents are asked to inform their child’s school of their application to Hurst.
Offers
Based on the results of the reasoning tests, predicted GCSE grades, interview performance and scholarship assessment (where relevant), offers will be made during the first week of December, subject to achieving the required grades at GCSE and receipt of a satisfactory reference from the student’s current school.
