St. Michael’s School

St Michael’s School is a high-performing cluster of schools, comprised of the Pre-Preparatory, Preparatory and Senior Schools, as well as a popular Sixth Form. One of the things that makes St. Michael’s a great community to belong to is that we take boys and girls from as young as 3 years old and they stay with us right through to Sixth Form. At the same time, in any given year, a great many pupils join us from other schools at all ages and are quickly welcomed and fully inducted into school life.

The schools have a close relationship and take part in many shared activities. This makes the transition from Primary to Secondary education a smooth one, but much more than that, it means that we’re all learning from one another and have great role models to follow in school. Places fill up quickly, so early application is recommended. For example, our September Year 7 forms are usually full the November before.

We aim to provide parents with as much information as possible about the school and the education we provide during the admissions procedure, in order to help parents make an informed decision when considering placing their child or children with us. The admissions procedures are borne out of a sincere intention to ensure that each prospective pupil can benefit fully from a St. Michael’s education and reach their true potential with us.

New pupils are assigned a ‘buddy’ to help them get to know others and find their way around, as well as being introduced to the pastoral staff who look after pupils’ day to day wellbeing. Furthermore, we have a visiting professional counsellor as well as Mental Health First Aiders. Not only is our pastoral care excellent, but our classes are of a particularly academic profile too, where pupils frequently learn in an accelerated manner. Furthermore, we celebrate the diversity among our pupils who all have different strengths and talents, as well as providing extra support where necessary to overcome any hurdles. Our aim in all things is to enable young people to discover who they are and develop character, learning important lessons whilst in school, to guarantee success beyond school and a fulfilling career.

Stages in our admissions process

Our Admissions Director, Sue Griffin, and Registrar, Judith Whitton, are always available to talk interested parents/guardians through the process of applying to join St. Michael’s School.

  • Stage one: Enquiry
  • Stage two: Informal visit
  • Stage three: Completion of application forms and associated forms
  • Stage four: Entrance examinations, provision of previous school reports & school-specific requirements for relevant information/paperwork
  • Stage five: School decision making process
  • Stage six: Communication of decision to parents/guardians

These stages are followed strictly in order and all applications are processed according to our Admissions Policy, which is available upon request.

Guest Visits & Transition Days

Sometimes we will ask that a guest visit is completed to school, where the prospective pupil spends a day getting to know us and for us to get to know them too. We see these as a key part of admissions to the Prep Schools in particular, but they are also available upon request for the Senior School too. Transition days are also held in the summer term to help Year 6 begin to make friends in the Senior School and feel settled before the Autumn term starts, becoming familiar with some of the responsibilities and routines of life in the Senior School.

A natural progression from school to school

Our Preparatory and Senior School teachers work closely together on curriculum so that there is a natural progression from Primary to Secondary school syllabuses. Our Scholarship and Entrance Assessment is compulsory for all Year 6 pupils wishing to enter the Senior School and we also administer these for any joiners to Years 8 & 9. Direct entry to Year 10 and 12 is possible provided an application is supported by the required information.

Senior School

Admission Process

Submit your completed form

Prospective parents from within the UK can download our St Mikes Application Form and return the completed form to us by email, fax or post. Alternatively, parents can complete and submit an online application. Informal visits and tours of the school are also welcome, prior to submitting an application.

Entry requirements and availability check

Upon receiving your application, we can then review your previous attainment, school reports and academic history. We will then contact you to discuss an interview and school tour after reviewing your application. An entrance examination is taken by all prospective entrants to the senior years, whereas Sixth Form entry is contingent on certain GCSE results.

Scholarships

At St Michael’s School, each year we have a small number of academic and sporting/musical scholarships available. All prospective pupils hoping to enter the senior school sit an entrance examination and those scoring sufficiently highly are eligible to apply for an academic scholarship. An entrance exam takes place annually in November and at other windows during the year. Prospective entrants to any senior school year can be considered for a scholarship. The academic scholarships are subject to: • School reports for the previous two years • Exceptional achievement in the entrance exam (the threshold for scholarships varies from year to year) • A meeting with the Headmaster. Any parents still wishing to make an enquiry in relation to scholarship places that may be still available please download the following details: Scholarships & Bursaries NB: This information only applies to new/prospective pupils.

Scholarships for Year 12 Entry

Scholarships for Year 12 Entry are subject to final GCSE results. In the first instance applicants should submit the following: • Completed Application Form • Report for Year 10/11 along with Mock Exam results or Forecast Confirmation. Places offered for Sixth Form are conditional until the GCSE results are received, at which point, provided the entry requirements are met, places will be confirmed.

International Students

We recognise the value of cultural diversity and therefore welcome applications from students of any nationality. Currently across the senior school we have students from a range of countries across the world, including China, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Nigeria, Russia, and Thailand creating a vibrant international community. The majority of international students are full-time boarders.

International students, as long as they meet our entry standards, can join the following year groups:

  • Pre-GCSE (Key Stage 3): Years 7 & 8
  • GCSE Preparation: Year 9
  • GCSE Two year Course: Year 10
  • A Level Two year Course: Year 12

How to Apply:

Applications can be submitted online or you can download the application form and submit to admissions@stmikes.co.uk or send by post. Obviously online is quick and easy and allows us to respond quickly. With your application we require the following documents:

  • School report for the current and previous year (certified translated copy where applicable)
  • Passport copy
  • Copies of any English Language Exams you may have completed.

Send your documents to: admissions@stmikes.co.uk

Entrance Assessments:

Once we have the above documentation all applicants are assessed in English and Maths. The English assessment includes the Oxford Online Placement with a written paper and the Maths paper is relevant to the Year group you will join. Entrance papers can take place during a visit to the school, a meeting overseas with the Director of Admissions, at the office of an approved Educational representative or at the British Council Office. Once we have the completed assessments the school will advise which year group is most suitable for you and how much, if any, additional ESOL lessons are required. The Head of ESOL may also wish to Skype with you should he feel that your English requires a verbal assessment. Across most of our year groups an international student can access language support (ESOL or IELTS classes). Ideally where possible we welcome potential students and their parents/guardian to visit the school. This allows you to see the school first hand and have the opportunity to chat to subject teachers and meet with current students. However where this is not possible you may have the opportunity to meet the Director of Admissions in your own city or alternatively a skype appointment will be arranged.
