Subject pre-requisites for Course Enrolment

AS Level English is compulsory.

English courses at the Lyceum develop cross-disciplinary, critical thinking and communications skills which are vital in the study of any subject and support careers in all fields. Many years of experience have shown that students who study English during their A Levels see benefits in their other subjects as well. Furthermore, all English medium colleges and universities, in Pakistan and abroad, as well as employers value competence in English speaking, writing and comprehension, and students will need strong language and critical thinking skills and metacognition skills to succeed at the university level.

Most students take English General, but those who have a proven command of the language can consider taking Language or Global Perspectives and Research.

Students may choose one of the three options below.

English General – AS Level (8021)

Pre-requisite: B in English at school and at the O Level. All students must give the AS level examination at the end of their first year.

English General students learn to improve their comprehension skills through reading and discussions on local and world issues. They improve and work on their writing skills as they learn to analyse, reflect and debate on topics studied.

English Language – AS (9093)

Pre-requisites: A/A* in English Language at O Level, excellent 9–11 English grades, and an attested photocopy of a dated and marked class 11 English Language composition test with the topic/questions. Students with weak writing skills and grammatical problems may not be accepted for this course.

In the first year, students learn how to analyze various genres, write for an audience and write imaginative / creative / descriptive pieces. In the second year, the focus moves on to spoken language, English as a global language and language acquisition. All students will sit the AS Level examination at the end of their first year. Students who have strong grades in AS Language may continue with the course and sit the A Level examination after the second year.

Global Perspectives and Research (GPR) – AS (9239)

Pre-requisites: In addition to very strong English grades in school and at O Levels, applicants will have to sit for the GPR admission test. Students should enjoy reading and reflection, and be interested in doing research.

Offered at both AS and A Level and completed within 1 year each, GPR encourages students to broaden their perspectives by engaging with global issues and trains them in critical analysis and reflection and become more disciplined observers, thinkers, researchers, writers and communicators.

Students must:

  • Research and write an essay of 1750 words on a global issue (not done in a timed exam, but outside of class). Students will learn how to do research as they engage, reflect and critically analyze global issues.
  • Research a topic on a local issue with a team, then individually create and present an 8 minute presentation. Then write an 800-word reflective essay.
  • Sit a one and a half hour paper.

Mathematics (9709)

Mathematical and quantitative skills are now key to advanced learning in all fields but particularly in science and business courses at A levels and Universities.

The Lyceum expects all its science and business students to take up AS Maths. Those who fear Maths should reconsider their choice of business or science subjects or embrace it by revising and consolidating their Maths base during the summer break. If still unable to cope with AS Maths, students may request permission to drop it at the beginning of November or after the mid-year exams, but pursuing it for one year will give them an edge and skill they will always be grateful for. Please carefully review university pre-requisites for your career options before you consider dropping Maths.

Mathematics consists of 2 Pure Mathematics components (P) and 2 elective components in Mechanics and Statistics (S).

Applicants who have not studied Additional Mathematics at O level are placed in a non-Add Math group in their First Year.

  • ln First Year, all students take P1 and S1
  • In Second Year all students take P3 and S2 except those with an Additional Mathematics background who are studying A level Physics but not A level Biology. They take P3 and M1 in the Second Year.

Further Mathematics (9231)

Pre-requisites: A* in Mathematics and Additional Mathematics at school and at the CIE O Level. Students wishing to take Further Mathematics must have the interest and dedication to study this challenging subject; success will require consistent hard work and focus.

Further Mathematics develops knowledge and skills in pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics beyond A Level Math and provides a stronger foundation for studying mathematics or related fields at the university level.

Students will take their AS Level exam after first year and the A Level exam after their second year. All students will take P1 and Mechanics in the first year, and P2 and Statistics in the second year.
