Applications can be submitted via our online Open Apply system. If this is your first time using Open Apply, please create an account. You will be required to upload the documents outlined in our checklist.

For last and this academic year admissions: applications to join Wellington during the current school year are welcome year-round on a rolling basis, though spaces are subject to availability. For this and next academic year admissions: applications will be accepted from 10th October.

Applications are reviewed by the Admissions team after the application is completed — online application is submitted, all required documents are received and the non-refundable RMB 3,000 application fee is paid.

An application is valid for one academic year (August–June) only. Applicants who wish to re-apply for the next academic year must submit a new application.

Admission assessments

An age-appropriate assessment will be arranged after the application form is completed.

For this and next academic year admissions: the Admissions team will contact you to schedule an early assessment.

For this and next academic year admissions: the admissions team will contact you from December. Arrangements will then be made for assessments which will take place between December and March.

Admission decisions

We try to communicate admissions decisions within five working days. However, please understand that it may take couple of weeks during admissions season.

For this and next academic year applications, please note that first-round decisions for Nursery, Reception and year 2 will be made in late January. All subsequent decisions will continue on a rolling basis throughout the admissions season.

A decision will be one of the following:

Successful application

Successful applicants receive an offer letter. To secure a place in the College, parents must accept the College’s terms and conditions and pay the RMB 18,000 resource fee within five days.

Unsuccessful application

Parents will be informed of unsuccessful applications by letter. The application is then closed. Applicants may submit another application after 12 months.

Waiting pool*

If no spaces are available, a 'waiting pool' letter will be sent. Parents will be contacted once a space becomes available (please see below to learn more).

Eligibility Requirements

In compliance with Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (SHMEC) policy, Wellington can only accept applications from families who meet the criteria in one of the six categories outlined below.

  • Type A. Working parent is a foreign national with a Shanghai Alien Work Permit
  • Type B. Working parent is a PRC national working in Shanghai. Child is born overseas (B1) or the child is born in Hong Kong SAR, China or Macau SAR, China or Taiwan, Province of China (B2)
  • Type C. Working parent holds a passport from Hong Kong SAR, China or Macau SAR, China or Taiwan, Province of China
  • Type D. SHMEC waiver letter holders—Parents and child are PRC national with foreign permanent residence permit. Child has over two-year studying experience in the country where he gets the permanent
  • Type E. Working parent is a PRC national, married to a non-working, non-PRC national, residing in Shanghai legally and child is a PRC national
  • Type F. Parent is a PRC national and has a residence permit. Child is a foreign national and holds a valid residence permit issued in Shanghai

Please submit all of the documents listed below to register your child. Applications will not be processed until all documents and the application fee have been received.

  • Working parent is a foreign national with a Shanghai Alien Work Permit
