Boarding at Farringtons

The 21st century places many demands on students today. Fortunately, 21st century boarding at Farringtons offers the means to both escape and embrace those challenges.

As Farringtons is their "second home", our boarders flourish because we provide the time, space and care with our 100+ years of experience and expertise. Our boutique-style boarding facilities, experienced house staff and outstanding all-round pastoral care ensures our boarders are happy and healthy, whilst their parents can be reassured that their children make excellent progress in their academic and character education.

Living in our girls’ boarding house (West House) and the boys equivalent (South House) enables the students to develop those all-important life skills of independence, confidence and service whilst surrounded by a “family” of differing ages, nationalities and personalities. Many of our boarders have families thousands of miles away, whilst some have families just around the corner. To live and study just outside London is a real privilege and our boarders are able to benefit from the vibrancy of the nation’s Capital whilst being in a safe, quiet and historically as well as aesthetically beautiful campus.

Whilst the majority of our boarders remain in school throughout term time or return home at weekends some also take advantage of flexi-boarding.

Boarding just one or two nights per week, each week, allows the students to participate in particular activities, see a little more of their friends and just have a time-out from the daily commute.

Flexi-boarding is becoming an increasingly attractive option for our students and parents who aren’t quite ready to completely leave home but are looking for preparation for the independence required at university.

Weekend Boarding Activities

When classes finish at 3.50pm, the boarders’ experience is only just beginning.

Organised by our dedicated Boarding Activities Co-ordinator, the students, in addition to supported prep time, enjoy a range of activities on and off-site.

Each evening there are various activities to broaden our boarders’ sporting, academic and cultural horizons.

Opportunities to learn to bake in the Food and Nutrition classrooms, stay fit and healthy in the swimming pool and gym, or enjoy a movie night on our 9-screen video wall in Ferens Hall, ensure the boarders’ physical and mental health are well and truly catered for.

Our unique location allows for a range of activities on-site in a safe, leafy environment (Scadbury Nature Reserve backs on to the School’s grounds) whilst at weekends the activity programme exploits the benefits of living on London’s doorstep.

Go-karting, mountain biking, paintballing, shopping, ice-skating and site-seeing complement visits to places such as Southern coastal resorts, Chinatown, museums, the O2 and Bluewater.

Day students are always welcome to join in the fun on an evening and weekend too.

Boarding Houses

The boarding community at Farringtons School aims to provide and nurture a caring, stimulating, Christian, family environment that is secure and safe and where pupils’ relationships with their peers and members of staff are open, positive and long-lasting.

Principles

  • To provide a caring Christian home for all boarders, regardless of race, age, gender or belief
  • To encourage boarders to support one another and learn to live together as a community, developing skills of responsibility and reliability
  • To encourage honesty, trust and respect between staff and boarders
  • To educate boys and girls together in the same community, to give them the capacity to relate to and understand the other sex on equal terms
  • To foster the development of confidence, courtesy and compassion
  • To encourage learning and growth so that each individual reaches his or her full potential, developing their personality and self-esteem
  • To encourage friendships both within a peer group and across a range of age groups
  • To promote teamwork and develop community spirit
  • To provide a broad education, offering academic, cultural, social, creative and sporting opportunities
  • To foster co-operation and collaboration between parents, staff, guardians and pupils
  • To develop an appreciation of, and sensitivity to, the needs, dignity and rights of others, as well as moral and aesthetic awareness
  • To balance freedom with responsibility and promote a culture of self-discipline

Facilities

The majority of boarders have single or twin study bedrooms. Boarders’ rooms are, like their bedrooms at home, safe, comfortable, personalised and with access to WiFi to help them study and relax. Both South House and West House have well-equipped kitchens, washing machines, contemporary bathroom and shower facilities and Common Rooms with sofas, games consoles, Netflix, table tennis tables etc. to help the boarders mix at the end of a long day!

Boarders also have access to school facilities outside normal lesson time, including the Sports Hall, Gym, Swimming Pool, Tennis Courts, Library, IT facilities and the Art Block.

Special Requirements

The School can cater for certain additional educational and welfare requirements, such as learning support or extra English language tuition for overseas pupils.

Flexi Boarding

Farringtons School is in a unique position within its location in that it has a thriving boarding community as well as day pupils.

We would like to highlight the opportunity of using flexi-boarding at Farringtons in order to help with the busy lifestyles that many families have, as well as introducing boarding to pupils who may want to consider it in the future.

If you need to be away for business (or pleasure) or you have other urgent commitments like caring for a family member, then you can book your child into flexi-boarding. Normally we require at least 24 hours’ notice, but we can also help in a real emergency.

Perhaps your son or daughter would like to prioritise studying and might find the school environment better suited, particularly around the exam period? Or maybe they have a friend who boards here and they would like to try the boarding experience?

Subject to bed availability, flexi-boarding is available to all pupils in the Senior School from Years 7 – 13.

Costs

  • 1 night flexi-boarding - free
  • 2 – 10 nights flexi-boarding - £35.00 per night
  • 11+ nights flexi-boarding - £72.00 per night.

One night of flexi-boarding includes an evening meal, breakfast, supervised evening prep and the chance to join any organised boarding activities, e.g. Swimming, Scuba Diving or Yoga.

Flexi-boarding costs will be added to termly invoices, unless otherwise agreed.

If you have any questions or you would like to book your son or daughter into flexi-boarding, please email Mrs Vail (fvail@farringtons.kent.sch.uk) for a booking form.
