Boarding is at the heart of PLC Armidale and has been since the College's inception in 1887.
Learning to live, eat, play and study together with girls from different family circumstances and cultures is a unique life experience.
Not only does Boarding build independence and strong friendships, it also develops resilience, tolerance, empathy and compassion. It prepares girls for life beyond school.
Our Boarders are supported in organising and balancing their commitments, from juggling timetables to homework, and co-curricular activities, not only by our dedicated and experienced staff but also by the many "boarding sisters" across the year groups.
Like every PLC Armidale student, our Boarders are encouraged to have a go and make the most of the opportunities available at the College and in the New England community.
Our Boarders flourish in the more personalised, boutique boarding experience at PLC Armidale.
Our experienced and friendly Boarding House staff provide a home away from home, creating a safe and happy environment that nurtures a strong sense of family and community.
And we work in partnership with Boarder families to ensure their boarding experience is a positive and memorable.
The physical location of the Boarding House and its close proximity to our Dining Room and Senior School, reflects the centrality of boarding to our College community as a whole.
Our Boarders come from a range of geographical and cultural backgrounds - from all over New South Wales, interstate, and overseas.
BOARDING OPTIONS
A range of flexible Boarding options is available including full time, weekly, part time and casual.
These options allow Boarders and their parents to choose a pattern of boarding which suits their needs.
Limited basic accommodation is also offered for Boarding families when they visit (bookings most definitely essential).
We understand that families of day students also have busy lives, and so we also offer an Extended Day Program for day students wishing to stay for after-school activities, dinner and prep.
Welcome to boarding at PLC ArmidaleBoarding House. It is always exciting returning to school at the start of a new year to see both old and new faces.
The boarding staff are so helpful and friendly it makes settling into the boarding routine a breeze.
Many exciting actives run throughout the year including themed nights every term that involve dressing up and playing games as the bond between girls and staff grows.
Park run, so many sporting events and the opportunity to visit town allow the us to get more involved with the local Armidale community.
All of us really appreciate our parents’ decision and the sacrifices they make so we can have this very special PLC Armidale education.
Boarding at PLC Armidale provides many diverse opportunities that may not have been available to many girls living at home or going to different schools.
In the four years I have been at PLC Armidale, I have been very involved with the Cattle team and have loved every second of it.
Showing cattle would not have been a possibility if I was at home or at many other boarding schools but is now something I am very passionate about and will continue after I finish my schooling. Other wonderful opportunities PLC Armidale offers include many musical groups, school drama productions, cultural, charitable and personable development experiences such as the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, along with a wide variety of sport and other activities that run on school days and weekends.
Looking back at my boarding experiences at PLC Armidale time has gone too quickly. I have enjoyed so many aspects of the boarding house life.
We offer a boutique residential experience for our Boarders. Our modern boarding facilities are impressive and our environment is welcoming, safe and secure. The bedrooms, bathrooms and common living spaces on each level in Todd McBean House, and recently renovated Austin & Hilton Houses, provide a comfortable and relaxed, homely environment.
BEDROOMS
We offer our Year 5 to Year 10 students a private, individual bedroom and study space within a dormitory of six students. Year 11 students share a bedroom for two, whilst our Year 12 girls enjoy single-room accommodation with two large desks. The Boarding House Captain who is elected each year, enjoys the benefit of a single room with its own ensuite. All Boarders have the use of large, comfortable common rooms, equipped with modern kitchens and televisions.
RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Our Boarders have access to a range of sporting and music facilities, including: synthetic tennis courts, gymnasium, athletics track, music practice rooms, along with beautiful gardens, grounds and safe outdoor spaces to relax in. Wireless internet is available in the Boarding House, which is carefully monitored by our staff. Supervised visits to the Armidale town centre for shopping and trips to the many places of interest around our community and region are also available to our Boarders.
HEALTH
To help ensure the health of your daughter in our care, our School Nurse attends to any medical needs. She also transports girls to respective medical appointments.
Our Health Centre is based in Austin House which is adjacent to the main Boarding House, Todd McBean, and is central to the College.
"Boarding is so much fun! It's like having a big sleepover with all your friends and sisters, every day." Year 8 Boarder
Our Boarders are fully supervised by experienced staff, and actively engaged in various activities on weekends and during the school week, participating in the full life of the College.
There is also a Boarders' representative Council which meets regularly with our Boarding staff to consult and plan age appropriate and fun activities.
Our Boarders can choose to be as busy or as relaxed as they like and may even have the odd job to do, just like home!
Some of our more recent activities have included:
Our Boarders are also invited to attend social events, activities and performances by other schools, both locally and further afield.
SPORT, MUSIC & OTHER ACTIVITIES
Sport and music are important features of our co-curricular activities and allow students to extend the range of participation developed within the college timetable.
Girls learning to play an instrument are able practice every weekday, under the supervision of a member of the music staff. There is also a piano available in the boarding house.
Our boarders also have the opportunity to participate in weekend sport, and bus transportation provided by PLC Armidale is available to take the girls to Sport UNE, to access the gym and pool facilities.
Many of our Boarders are also members of the busy PLC Armidale Cattle team which attends many local and state Agricultural Shows such as the Brisbane Royal (Ekka).
