Churchie’s Boarding House is located on the school campus in the inner-city suburb of East Brisbane. Boarding has been an integral part of the Churchie community since the school settled in East Brisbane in 1918.

Churchie’s seven-day-a-week boarding philosophy provides a place for boarders to thrive. The school enjoys the support that parents provide, many of whom have been with Churchie for generations.

For over a century Churchie has held boarding at the heart of its community. Boarders enjoy access to the Churchie facilities and academic staff for the extended hours that they are at school to enrich their schooling experience.

Staff recognise the challenges that boarders face and enjoy caring for young men. With the right levels of support and guidance from staff, along with the positive relationships that our boys build with their peers, Churchie Boarders develop a strong sense of belonging. With belonging comes a sense of self and good self-esteem. It is only once we have this balance that a young man will fulfil his potential.

Our aim is to provide a high level of care in order for boys to be safe and happy in this environment.

At Churchie we seek to establish a strong partnership with you to develop your sons into outstanding young men who will lead and serve their communities.

The aims of the Churchie Boarding community are to:

  • Provide a happy, secure and challenging environment for each boy so that he may thrive as an individual to achieve his potential
  • Ensure that each boy engages with his academic responsibilities with vigour and commitment
  • Provide each boy with support to grow spiritually, academically, personally and through the service he can provide to the wider community beyond the school
  • Encourage each boy to broaden his horizons and realise the possibilities open to him in the global community
  • Develop leadership, resilience and self-reliance skills and awareness of the need to be responsible for himself and others.

Boarding at Churchie is for students enrolled in Years 7 to 12. Boarding students come from across Australian metropolitan and rural areas and overseas destinations including Hong Kong, Singapore and Papua New Guinea.

Churchie Boarding offers students very secure and comfortable accommodation in our two main, air-conditioned boarding houses, Gerald and Goodwin. Boarders are cared for by friendly, supportive and experienced staff including a Housemaster, Assistant Housemaster, a Resident Housemother and Resident Supervisor. This key team of four colleagues form the pastoral care team for each house and they get to know and understand the boys very well.

Our boarding staff encourage and arrange opportunities for boarders to experience the many and varied cultural activities in and around Brisbane. Visits and excursions to the cultural complex, theatres, cinemas, sporting events and theme parks all feature in a vibrant recreational and cultural programme.

Academic programs

Academic success is the focus of boarding life at Churchie. Every boarder is expected to be a scholar and apply himself wholeheartedly to his academic responsibilities.

Our qualified resident staff instil in the boys effective study habits and a sense of self-discipline.

  • Homework is supervised six nights per week with access to The Centenary Library, study resources and select academic staff at each session.
  • Years 7, 8 and 9 boarders experience a programme to enhance their study skills. This includes developing time management skills, effective reading, researching and concept mapping.
  • Academic support, study and revision routines are tailored to individual year groups.
  • The Housemaster and Assistant Housemaster are the first point of contact for parents’ enquiries and concerns. These key staff are available daily to provide academic counselling, mentoring and to assist with goal-setting and time management.

Boarding principles

  • Boarding is based on open and honest trusting relationships and mutual respect for the individual.
  • The communication of values is vital to the success of the community.
  • Our aim is the development of a person: emotionally, morally, intellectually, socially, spiritually and physically. All members of the community are expected to contribute and participate so they may broaden their experience, understanding and achievement.
  • Each boarder and member of staff has the right to work, rest, play and relax free from bullying and harassment of any form.
  • Each boarder has the right to extend his intellectual and academic endeavours in an environment that is positive and encouraging, and in conditions that are conducive to learning.
  • There is equality of opportunity for all students regardless of culture, religion, ethnicity and background.
  • Staff and students respect the right of each other to privacy.
  • Leadership in boarding is embraced through the opportunity to serve others.
  • It is observed in students who take a genuine interest in all members of the house, and are positive role models, approachable and who earn the respect of the community without being self-serving.

Our boarding facilities

Churchie's modern, purpose-built dormitories are conducive to academic study. They offer greater privacy, wireless internet access in each cubicle and increased storage space to enable a clutter-free environment.

Individual rooms are provided to boarders from Years 10 to 12. Although high levels of privacy are provided, our emphasis on community living, participation and respect for each other is reinforced daily.

As a community, we dine together at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meal times at the boarding house combine a relaxed family atmosphere with an emphasis on table manners and appropriate social behaviour.

The self-service dining hall is spacious and contemporary and offers ample food choice ranging from full continental breakfasts or hot breakfasts to various cuisines based on theme nights such as steak night and wok night. Laundry is cleaned on-site each weekday.
