The boarding house community is built upon the values of trust, respect, responsibility and accountability. These values foster the development of a positive environment where each boarder is supported and encouraged to achieve their personal best.

Our facilities are uniquely homely, providing each student with their own room. Each room is fresh and modern, with a basin and vanity, bed, heater, ample cupboard space, desk and lockable door. Many of our rooms overlook Lake Jindabyne, which provides a tremendous view in both summer and winter.

Our boarders are provided with an excellent activities program, taking advantage of our unique location near the ski fields and the beautiful natural environment of the surrounding rural areas. During winter, boarders have the option to be on the mountain three days a week! Other activities including equestrian, aviation, mountain biking, trampolining, netball, soccer, rugby and Navy Cadets provide boarders with ample activity throughout the year. Our weekend program often takes advantage of Lake Jindabyne, Kosciuszko National Park, Canberra and the South Coast.

The boarding house staff and I look forward to working with you and your family throughout your time at the Snowy Mountains Grammar School boarding house.

Facilities

Located on the banks of the picturesque Lake Jindabyne, the newly renovated Snowy Mountains Grammar School boarding house provides a modern, family-like facility in the heart of the school.

The current SMGS boarding house is located in the original boarding house used during the development of the Snowy Hydro Scheme. In 2016, the boarding house was completely renovated and provides students with modern facilities that create a family-like atmosphere.

All boarders have access to:

  • Individual bedroom with vanity, desk and cupboard
  • Common rooms with TV, DVD, etc.
  • Kitchen, incorporating fridge, microwave, coffee and tea-making facilities, etc., as well as oven and stove top available for limited use in consultation with boarding staff
  • Access to computers
  • Wi-Fi access from their rooms and within the boarding house for both study and recreational purposes
  • Sporting facilities, including the school oval and multi-purpose court (MPC)
  • Barbecue facilities
  • The facilities of the day school, including the library, which is open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday)

The boarding house is a short walk to the heart of Jindabyne and students have access to the amazing environment the surrounds the school grounds.

Activities

There are many activities organised through the school and the boarding house.

This is to ensure that our students stay active. Exercise is very beneficial and has been shown to help the whole body cope better with stress, and helps the brain to function at its best for optimal learning. Hence, all students in Years 7-11 are required to participate in at least one activity per week. They are free to choose in which activity they participate from the variety provided at school, from external providers, or they can organise their own activity such as a weekly skate park session.

After-School Activities

During the week, a variety of after-school activities are available for students to participate in. These sessions are run by both boarding and teaching staff. Students can participate in a school-organised or an externally provided activity.

Weekend Activities

Regular activities are organised by staff for those students who stay in the house on the weekends. The schedule of activities is usually published at the beginning of each term.

Weekend activities usually occur on Saturday. Previous activities have included:

  • Walk and picnic around the lake
  • Swimming at the aquatic centre or the beach
  • Shopping in Canberra
  • Laser tag
  • Ten pin bowling
  • Rock climbing
  • Go-Karts
  • Paintball
  • Movies
  • Mountain biking

Sunday is usually kept as a day of rest for students.

Externally Provided Activities

Many of our students take part in the externally provided activities such as:

  • Rugby with the Jindabyne Bush Pigs
  • Dancing
  • Gym
  • Karate
  • Navy Cadets
  • Nippers
  • Scouts
  • Dragon boating with the Snow Dragons
  • Swimming club
  • Trampolining
  • Winter Sports Club at Perisher.

Meals

Our kitchen is run by a local independent catering company, owned and managed by an experienced executive chef.

Their brief is to provide a healthy, wholesome, balanced diet for the residents, which is reflected in the overall health and vitality of our residential students. We believe the SMGS boarding house provides some of the best boarding house catering in the state.
