Boarding Students Fee
Applying to boarding school can be overwhelming. Here’s a breakdown to help make the application process as simple as possible. Just complete these six steps and you’re done!
Apply
To apply for the next school year, go to our online application portal, create an account, and submit an application. Once you submit your application, you will have access to the other required forms through the application portal. McCallie also accepts the SSAT Standard Application Online (SAO).
If you are interested in applying for the nexr school year, please contact the admissions office for more information.
Schedule an Interview
The interview is a chance for us to get to know you, and for you to ask questions. It is more of a casual conversation than a formal interview. Most campus visits include an interview, and interviews can also be arranged by video conference if you are unable to visit us. Contact the admission office (admission@mccallie.org) or your admission counselor for interview options.
Submit Teacher Recommendations
Using the application portal, electronically send recommendation forms to your current English & math teachers. These forms will become available on Nov. 1.
Submit Transcripts and School Forms
Upload transcripts or report cards for your three most recent years of school (including this year) in the application portal. In addition, send the School Report form to the principal or counselor at your current school. School report forms will become available on Nov. 1.
Personal Introduction
This is your opportunity to be creative and tell us about yourself. Through the form in the application portal, upload a short video or write an essay detailing your interests and why you see yourself McCallie. This form will be available once you complete the application.
SSAT
McCallie requires applicants to take the Secondary School Admission Test [SSAT]. For information about taking the SSAT, including how to take it at home, please visit ssat.org. Be sure to share your score report with us using our school code 4744. Alternative forms of testing may be considered for older applicants.
The boarding experience at McCallie is built from the ground up with the needs of boys in mind.
From the physical spaces to the experiences that we offer, every McCallie boy will have the chance to find his place and leave here incredibly well-prepared for life in college and beyond.
Our boarding students gain independence, responsibility and maturity in an environment thoughtfully designed to provide both them with both structure and autonomy. Teachers actively mentor them and help them develop vital life skills in a fun, tight-knit community of brotherhood.
Our innovative morning program ensures that every boy is out of bed and ready to, in the words of Dean of Community and Brotherhood Ricky Thomas, "attack the day!"
Boys gather in the dining hall four days a week for a hearty breakfast, a motivational word from a faculty or staff member and an activity geared to engage the brain (and sometimes the body!) to send boys off to class with the energy they need to be focused and ready for classes.
We take the job of inspiring boys and building men seriously, and our year-focused programs are designed to meet the unique needs of each class year.
Monthly programs for freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors focus on life skills, study skills, and adapting to the fast changes that life brings in the high school years. More than lectures, the programs have a healthy dose of activity and engagement to ensure boys get the message and absorb it.
We know that boys need the opportunity to be mentored and to mentor others, and the boarding program at McCallie provides those vital relationships at every turn.
Each dorm is led by faculty members who also serve as advisors to a group of boys. Advisory groups meet weekly as part of the schoolwide advisory curriculum. Beyond that, advisors regularly plan meals and activities with their advisees, bringing a touch of home to life in the dorm.
A select group of senior boarders serves as resident assistants each year. RAs are responsible for ensuring their fellow students comply with dorm rules, but they also serve as important peer mentors and guides to life on the Ridge.
Boys need action, and McCallie is wired to provide it. Our weekend activities program rivals many colleges with the breadth and depth of activities available. From the BIG Five year-long intramural competition between the dorms to a host of on-campus activities and social events with our sister school, GPS, the Ridge always has something to offer.
Beyond the campus gates, there's regular shuttles on the weekend to downtown Chattanooga's active scene of theaters and restaurants, as well as to local stores and the mall for all the "necessities" of teenage life. Trips regularly take boys to Atlanta, Nashville and beyond for college and professional sporting events, concerts and performances.
