Welcome to boarding at The King's School. It is my hope that during your time with us, you thoroughly enjoy your boarding experience and immerse yourself in all that the School has to offer. As part of a unique community, it is your responsibility to respect the positive traditions of our great school. Take comfort in the knowledge that every Kingsman has an unequaled opportunity to learn. Choose to spend your time wisely - find those things that you are truly passionate about and pursue these interests with great vigour. Above all, make the most of those opportunities available to you - get to know your peers and forge life-long friendships that will stand you in good stead, now and into the future.
Learning to live in a community is a vital skill for life and research teaches us that boarders develop close friendships and values such as resilience, tolerance and independence, often much earlier than others who are not given the same educational opportunities. Living at school offers many advantages – time that would otherwise be allocated to travel can be better utilised, enabling boarders to be fully engaged in their school work, sporting endeavours and other co-curricular activities. Our boarders have access to academic support from a selection of qualified tutors who are available throughout the day and in the evenings. The tutors assist our boarders with their homework, providing direction and enabling the boys to make the most of their prep time outside of the classroom.
The King's School offers unparalleled boarding facilities with large, purpose-built boarding houses staffed by qualified teachers. We are committed to providing the very best in residential accommodation and have, in recent years, made a significant investment to ensure that our boarding environment is the very best available. We embrace the use of technology and all boarders have access to the same services as those found in Industry. Accommodation is available in dormitories, twin-shares and single bed-studies that feature King Single beds and climate controlled air-conditioning. Located on over 320 acres of land with swimming pools, gym facilities, sporting fields and a Mountain Bike track, the School is conveniently located in the geographic centre of Sydney - enabling our boarders to enjoy a country schooling experience in the heart of Australia's largest city.
A note to all boarders: An incredible and exciting adventure awaits your significant contribution - get involved, enjoy all that is on offer, make the most of this amazing opportunity and find those things that you are truly passionate about. Do these things and I guarantee that you will thoroughly enjoy a lifetime of learning at The King's School.
Boarders enjoy being able to access a range of academic facilities during the school day and after hours, including the Centre for Learning and Leadership, Technology, Drama and Music facilities. The School's sporting facilities are also made available to boarders after hours. These facilities include 17 ovals, adjacent bushland, the Sports Centre (with its weights room and three indoor basketball courts), two swimming pools, six outdoor basketball courts, about 20 cricket nets and 12 tennis courts.
Other key facilities include the Dining Hall, Health Centre, three canteens and the Braeside Shop, from which regular school supplies and uniform articles can be purchased.
King's students enrolled in Year 4 and upwards may board, either as full boarders, or as weekly boarders who go home on weekends. Weekly boarding is becoming particularly attractive as an option for busy parents who are looking for the best of both worlds: an excellent education during the week, yet the capacity to spend quality recreational time with their sons on the weekend.
The Prep boarding facilities are centred in the beautiful and historic grounds of the Gowan Brae mansion which adjoins the Preparatory School. Run by a devoted staff, including a Housemaster, tutors and house parents, a homely environment is provided for the boarders.
Parents choose boarding as an option for their sons for many reasons. Some register a liking for the extra academic help available to students after normal school hours, whilst others value the security that a boarding environment can give, where students are supervised at all times and acceptable group ‘norms’ are established which encourage appropriate behaviours.
Perhaps one of the most significant benefits that boarding can give is to teach students in what it means to live in community. A boarding experience can require students to be mindful of the needs and opinions of others. For further information about boarding at The King's School, contact the Registrar.
All Year 7 boarders are accommodated in the transition house - Gowan Brae. As this houses younger boarders, the staffing structure is more intensive. In addition to the Gowan Brae Housemaster, there are nine residential tutors and a residential matron.
Senior houses have a vertical structure accommodating boys from Years 8 to 12. Each senior house is led by a residential Housemaster and assistants (at least two residential tutors and a residential matron).
Commencing in 2011, the senior boarding houses have been amalgamated into four, with the plan being to retain a boarding enrolment at King's of about 400. During this transition period, there will continue to be extensive rebuilding and expansion of boarding facilities on the “Left” Bank. Boarders will be temporarily relocated to other boarding houses during these renovations. Broughton Forrest House was completed in 2013 with boys moving in ready for the new school year and boarders moved into the refurbished Baker Hake House in 2015. There are six residential staff plus a residential matron attached to each of these expanded houses. The boarding upgrade will continue through the next couple of years.
