Boarding

The learning journey our boarding school students undertake far surpasses academics.

Living as part of a caring community of British and International students in a safe setting in the heart of a small town by the sea, you'll be just minutes from the capital city of Cardiff, a wealth of opportunity awaits.

Explore the Boarding pages to discover more about the vibrant global community that is Westbourne.

Westbourne is far more than just a school, it's a community....a family.

A close-knit boarding community, our family of boarders, live and eat together in one warm, supportive and friendly family-like unit. As a natural and carefully nurtured extension of the family environment of the whole school.

Students are cared for by our House Parents, who, with a wealth of experience in looking after pupils from across the globe are dedicated to caring, ensuring their safety, security and well-being.

Sleeping & Snoozing

Located just 2 minutes walk from the Senior School and Sixth Form, the Boarding House is fully co-educational, with separate floors for boys and girls, mixed activities, meals and areas for relaxing.

For those who opt for Home Stay, you're warmly welcomed to take part in any of the meals and activities going on throughout the week within the Boarding House, as well as with your host family. Your room will be either a single, or you'll be sharing, dependant on year group and before you even arrive you'll have the opportunity to make friends with a student buddy, to support you from the day you open the door to your room.

Weekdays start around 7.30 am, with Miss Janette serving breakfast in the dining room, a healthy mix of cereals, fruits, toasts and pastries to start the day before you head off to school.

Weekends have a more leisurely start with breakfast from 9 am.

We recognise that some students prefer a smaller, home environment, particularly younger students and those in their final IB year, therefore as well as accommodation within the Boarding House, we also offer a Home Stay option for students.

We're as enthusiastic and passionate about community life at Westbourne, as we are about academics!

A truly global boarding family, comprising over twenty unique nationalities, all cared for by our dedicated and committed House & Home Stay Parents.

Boarders share their experience of Life at Westbourne, you'll read that there is something for everyone here at Westbourne, friendships that can last a lifetime, activities to spur new interests, classes to ignite curiosity and importantly...a real home, away from home.

Westbourne Boarding House

Our boarding community and the Boarding House is an integral part of Westbourne life, very much a home, from home, during term time, where students feel happy in a secure and safe environment, fully supported both academically and pastorally, to learn and flourish.

Rooms at Westbourne are fully furnished, with pupils actively encouraged to personalise their bedrooms, as part of making the boarding house their home, during term time.

Some of our students choose to stay with a local family, typically younger students, or those in their final IB year.Home Stay offers a quieter family environment, excellent opportunities to improve language skills, as well as full inclusion in Boarding House activities.

Boarders enjoy a home cooked meal every evening, from a variety of cuisines, with care taken to cater for dietary requirements. Fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks are always on offer and students are also welcome to prepare their own simple meals and hot drinks.

After homework, activities are on offer, from the widely popular Varsity Challenge night, with teams competing for points across a range of activities, to jigsaws, board games, film nights and of course, the opportunity to take part in external clubs and visit the gym.

Our Boarding House parents also arrange popular excursions, more recent trips have included day trips to the University City of Oxford and birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford upon Avon.

The underlying ethos is one of shared community where students and staff work together to create a family-like atmosphere.
