Boarding

At Monmouth School for Boys we are justly proud of our boarding, having been voted Archant’s Best British Boarding School (in a vote by parents). Around 30% of our pupils are boarders, and one of the reasons for the success of our boarding is, we believe, that we regard our boarders as an important and integral part of our school community.

Every day in boarding is special as there is so much to share and be involved with. We aim to ensure that everyone feels welcome and supported and that all our boys have an opportunity to contribute to boarding life.

Our aim is that every boarder should enjoy a full and rich experience of school life and to come out the other end happy, with lifelong friends, lovely memories and a strong sense of society.

Pastoral

The most important element of our pastoral care is the family atmosphere that we maintain in the boarding houses. Our house staff always aim to be approachable and encourage boys to share any problems with them. Boys can also talk to staff counsellors, the School Nurses, School Doctor or any of the teaching staff.

The school also has an independent school Counsellor, a child psychotherapist, who visits the school once a week and can be seen by confidential appointment.

Our school Chaplain, Rev. Clifford Swartz, pays regular visits to each boarding house to get to know the boys and to give them the opportunity to talk about anything that is worrying them. He is happy to arrange one-to-one appointments outside his visits.

Medical

All boys are registered with the school Doctor at a local GP’s surgery. Minor ailments are dealt with by house staff; anything more serious is handled by the school Nurses or the school Doctor.

Each boarding house has a sick room where boys can stay if they are feeling under the weather or even if they are tired and need to catch up on some sleep away from their room-mates.

Boarding Houses

the structure of the boarding houses will be:

  • Chapel House, ages 7 to 13 (up to Year 8)
  • Middle school houses, ages 14 to 17 (Years 9 to 12)
    • New House
    • School House
    • Weirhead House
  • Buchanan House, ages 17 to 18 (Year 13)

Each house has a Housemaster, Matron, and a team of house tutors. Many of the house staff live there with their families, often with young children and pets,

Boarders’ Activities

All boarders are encouraged to participate in the extra-curricular activities on Sundays. We provide a wide range of activities over the term and these trips for boarders are run jointly with pupils from Monmouth School for Girls.

We do not run activities for boys on Saturdays, other than the cinema or senior boys, as they have school and sport on Saturdays.

Overseas Students

International Students play a very important part in the life of Monmouth School for Girls. Currently we have girls from Canada, Spain, Germany, Hong Kong, China and Nigeria to name but a few living alongside our UK boarders.

It can be a daunting prospect moving, often half way around the world, to a new place, new school, full of new people. We can promise your student a HUGE welcome and it won’t be long before she really does regard us as her ‘second’ family. We are extremely proud of the pastoral care we offer to each and every one of our pupils.

We very much welcome enquiries from overseas students wishing to join Monmouth School Girls’ Prep or Monmouth School for Girls. There is currently a small number of overseas students and we take great care to maintain a good balance of British and international students in the boarding houses.
