The College is rightly proud of the pastoral care given to its pupils as enshrined in our boarding principles laid out below. The Head of Boarding & Pastoral Care supervises all boarding matters in the school with his experienced team of Resident Tutors ably assisting. The result is a small, family feel to the school, which makes all those pupils who are boarding, and many miles from home, feel happy, safe and comfortable. The school is a member of the Boarding School's Association; the executive board of which has the Principal as the ISA represntative amongst its members.
Brooke House College aims to provide a friendly, happy and enterprising environment where pupils can learn to live together in order to achieve success in all aspects of their school careers. In particular, within the boarding houses, we look to engender team spirit, tolerance, independence, respect for themselves and others as well as gaining confidence to succeed at university and in the workplace.
The boarding houses form the backbone of our community and are the key drivers in delivering pastoral care to the pupils. Leading each house is a resident tutor, who is the first port-of-call for all pupils seeking help and advice. The resident tutors report to the senior resident tutor, who leads the team and chairs the residential staff meetings. Each meeting considers safeguarding, admissions, medical matters, academic matters, incident reports and other ‘routine’ items. The senior resident tutor ensures consistency of care, rules/guidelines and adherence to the National Minimum Standards for boarding. Along with the senior residential tutor and the other residential tutors, the pupils are supported by the college’s medical staff, the college counsellor, the independent listeners and the rest of the staff team both domestic and academic.
The houses are the home-from-home for each pupil and as such they are caring and compassionate places. Life skills such as accepting community values, shared living and treating each other with respect and listening to all points of view are developed within the houses. The houses are also ably supported by a full and comprehensive PSHCE programme.
Each boarding house occupies its own building and generates a unique character driven by each resident tutor and the pupils within it. Houses organise evening and weekend events and compete strongly in inter-house events. The ‘student voice’ is listened to keenly with each house having a ‘house council’. The council meets to discuss the many matters raised by the pupils. Minutes of each house council meeting are sent to the Principal so that matters raised can be discussed in senior management team meetings and with the proprietors.
The whole pastoral system is formally supervised and monitored by the Designated Safeguard Lead DSL and the proprietor with the pastoral care brief. The residential staff are also all trained first aiders and trained to deliver certain medicines. Regular audits are carried out on the facilities as a part of a routine maintenance process and so that each house is compliant with ISSRs and NMS.
We no longer have dormitories; rather the college has single or double studies. Many of the studies have en suite toilet and bath/shower facilities. Those that do not, have good communal facilities. All houses have common room areas, TV facilities, laundry facilities, kitchenettes and every house is fully wi fi enabled.

While students are with us at Brooke House we hope that they come to view the college as their home and the Principal and the staff as their guardians. Boarding houses fall into different categories, supervised and over 18.
Boarding houses can be found on and off the main Brooke House campus. As a rule, all students under 16 will be accommodated on campus. Students will only be permitted to live in over 18 accommodation if they have parental permission. All supervised accommodation has at least one live-in, full-time, residential tutor. The over 18 boarding houses are supervised by the head of boarding & pastoral care.
Accommodation Facilities
Students are allocated in single gender, comfortable,well-equipped boarding houses. All the boarding houses possess a sitting room, with television and DVD player and a kitchenette where students can prepare their own snacks in the evenings and at weekends. All boarding houses are equipped with WiFi. While all accommodation blocks possess their own laundry facilities there is also a central laundry with industrial washing and drying machines. A common meeting point for students is the college’s recently refurbished Paul Kitchener Building, which has pool and table tennis tables available. The building is also equipped with a tuck shop, SKY TV and WiFi.
Holiday Accommodation
Brooke House accommodation is open to all students during the half term holidays at no extra cost. Students in over 18 accommodation are welcome to remain with us during the Winter and Spring holidays, whilst the college is closed. Students in supervised accommodation are not permitted to remain during these holiday periods. As the academic demands at Brooke House are high, outside the classroom the college atmosphere is deliberately informal. Rules and restrictions are kept to a common-sense minimum. This allows both boys and girls to enjoy a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere and encourages them to respect their liberty without abusing it.
