Senior Boarding

Gordonstoun is one of the last few remaining full boarding schools in Great Britain.

Here tradition meets a forward-thinking broader curriculum to create a balanced learning experience. Being a full boarding school allows us to focus on providing students with a stimulating, challenging and exciting range of lessons and activities seven days a week.

Although primarily a boarding school, around 15% of our senior school students are day pupils. They are encouraged and expected to take part in the broad range of curricular activities we provide for all our students.

Each student – whether day or boarding – joins one of the School’s eight boarding houses. There are seven 'through-houses' (Years 9-13), four for boys, three for girls plus a small sixth form boys’ house (Years 12-13). Although each house is distinctive, all have exceptional pastoral teams who devote boundless time, energy and expertise to developing, encouraging, advising and supporting the students in their care.

The pastoral teams

Each student’s personal development and wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do here at Gordonstoun. The Housemistress or Housemaster has overall responsibility for the happiness and safety of the students in their care and they live within the boarding house with their families (and even their pets). Assistant Housemasters and Assistant Housemistresses and Matrons help to provide the highest level of support and care. Whether the worry is a sore throat or anxiety about exams, help is always close at hand.

Broader curriculum

A broader curriculum broadens minds.

We don’t put students in boxes at Gordonstoun. Classrooms serve a purpose, but many of our learning experiences take place in much more stimulating environments – picture a state-of-the-art dance studio or the middle of the Moray Firth.

Internationalism

Students who think globally can see the bigger picture.

Outdoor education

A variety of outdoor experiences broadens skills, strengths and minds.

Sailing & STV

These powerful learning experiences are some of the most memorable at Gordonstoun.

Sport & PE

Healthy bodies make healthy minds, and sport is a fundamental part of the curriculum.

The arts

Performance and participation encourage self-expression, self-awareness and confidence.

These skills can then be put to use back in the classroom where they will help students focus, problem solve and take new challenges in their stride.

We believe the wider the range of learning experiences and environments the better. This helps students discover more about themselves as they grow and develop with every exciting new experience. It builds character, friendships and instils a can-do attitude to life, wherever they find themselves in the future.

Junior Boarding

Diversity is very important at Gordonstoun, so we are delighted to have a good mix of both boarders and day pupils. Children come from as far afield as the Far East, the Middle East, Africa and Europe, adding to the rich cultural mix here in the rolling Moray countryside.

Junior boarding pupils have their very own home, Aberlour House, where they share comfortable rooms with no more than six other children. They can decorate their cabin bed however they chose, making their private space their own.

We offer a choice of full and weekly boarding and even flexi boarding, which gives parents the opportunity to book regular nights. We have an exciting and varied seven day programme which keeps the children entertained, engaged and happy. Weekend activities include barbecues, games, rocket building, film nights, trips to the local beaches, castles and nearby outdoor attractions including wildlife and adventure parks.

Day pupils play a full and equal part in life at Gordonstoun Junior School and are welcome to join in any boarding activities if there is space. They are also invited to stay for supper and take part in after class activities and prep at school, on each weekday.

It is all part of the inclusive, varied and richly rewarding life here at one of the country’s best boarding schools.

Broader curriculum

A broader curriculum broadens minds.

At Gordonstoun we believe that classrooms come in many shapes and sizes, and the wider the range of learning experiences the better. This helps pupils discover more about themselves as they grow and develop with every exciting new experience. It builds character, friendships and instils a can-do attitude to life, wherever they find themselves in the future.

Internationalism
One the fundamental objectives at Gordonstoun is the promotion and understanding of internationalism.

Outdoor education
Weekly outdoor experiences introduce students to activities like walking and bush craft.

Sailing & STV
They build their confidence on the water by padding the school’s kayaks and sailing our cutters out on the Moray Firth.

Sport & PE
Physical Education and team sports are an integral part of the broad curriculum here at the Gordonstoun Junior School.

The arts
Our richly varied curriculum encourages every child to take up a musical instrument and to sing in one of Gordonstoun’s three choirs.

Every child takes part in outdoor activities, a variety of team and individual sports and a range of performing arts which build self-confidence, resilience and an ability to work in a team. These skills are then invaluable back in the classroom where they help pupils focus, problem solve and take new challenges in their stride.
