About Our Dorms
Boarding on campus is an integral part of the AUP experience. AUP Residential Life is a significant component of Student Life that empowers students to grow academically, socially, culturally, and emotionally. The experience of living away from home amongst a global group of peers allows students to gain a deeper understanding of their true selves, grow in confidence, become independent, and appreciate the value of diversity. AUP boarding students graduate well-equipped for a successful transition into university life.
Meals
Our meals are catered locally every day at AUP, and we strive to meet special dietary needs of students to the extent that it is possible. If you would like to download an example of our menus, they are below. If you have specific concerns, please email office@aupschool.org.
Dorms at American University are designed to be a student’s home away from home, and residing at our boarding school is an essential part of each student’s campus life experience.
Students at our college prep boarding school enjoy the safety of living on a small, secure campus located near the heart of downtown Los Angeles, steps away from enriching cultural experiences. If you’re living away from home for the first time, you may not know what to expect. Here are five things you need to know about experiencing a boarding school dorm life at AUP School.
About AUP Campus Life: The Basics
American University dorms are separated by gender — boys are located on the mezzanine floor, and girls are on the third floor. Each dorm floor has common areas for students to use as they wish, and these include a kitchen area for cooking, a sitting room for socializing, relaxation area and place for studying.
Cleaning services are provided to keep living areas tidy, and laundry services are also provided for all students at AUP School. These services allow students to focus on growing emotionally, socially, and academically.
AUP Campus Catering
All meals provided for students at our California boarding school are catered, and we do our best to meet the dietary needs of students. If you have specific concerns, you can always contact office@aupschool.org.
Boarding School Schedule
You can find a complete daily schedule outline here, but your day starts bright and early around 6:50 am. Breakfast is served at 7:30, and your academic day begins at 8 am and ends around 3:30. After school, there are plenty of co-curricular and activities taking place, followed by dinner at around 6 pm. After dinner, it’s time to study, and then have free time in your dorm room until around 10 pm, when things start wrapping up until it’s lights out at 10:30 pm.
On the weekends and nonacademic days, your schedule is much more open-ended, allowing you the freedom to explore the heart of downtown LA and all it has to offer. Our California boarding school is within walking distance of multiple museums, fashion and art districts, famous music and sports venues and a variety of ethnic enclaves like Chinatown, Koreatown, etc.
Packing for Boarding School
When you’re moving away from home, it might be overwhelming to think about all the things you have to take with you. AUP School provides a comprehensive boarding school packing list to help you get started. You’ll need bedding, clothes and other bedroom essentials, like an alarm clock and earplugs or an eye mask if you like to go to bed early. Toiletries and showering essentials are important too, as are towels, washcloths and a small organizer to take health and beauty necessities with you when walking to and from the bathroom area.
AUP School Promotes Healthy Living
American University Preparatory School is partnered with the Ketchum-Downtown YMCA organization, just a short walk from the Los Angeles campus. Students can take advantage of this health and wellness center’s indoor pool, gymnasium, running track, weights, cardio equipment and a full lineup of health and wellness programs and group exercise classes to help students feel good and stay active.
While preparing for your new adventure at AUP School, if you ever have any questions, you can always contact a member of our admissions staff, and they will do their best to answer it. We look forward to helping students increase their independence and develop responsibility while enjoying everything that boarding school dorm life has to offer.
