At GVCS Pennsylvania, boarding provides students a greater sense of independence, more opportunities for social and academic responsibility, more occasions for academic work with other students and faculty outside the classroom, and closer relationships with other students and faculty which come from living together. Boarding, therefore, is of great benefit to most students, especially as they grow older and prepare to leave for college.
1. Dormitory Facilities and Amenities
Unlike the facilities in the Mungyeong and Eumseong Campuses, the dormitory facilities and amenities
available at the Pennsylvania Campus are designed to imitate the average American home. In order to better manage and guide students residing in the dormitories, the dormitory facilities contain 4 sets of 2 buildings that have been connected together. Within these facilities are the following amenities:
Every dormitory room assigned to students accommodate 2 to 3 students depending on the size of the room. In addition, air conditioning units are provided in each room. As per safety protocol, all dormitory facilities three different emergency exit ways for quick and safe evacuation.
2. Assigned Individual Amenities for Students
The following are a list of amenities provided for students living in the student dormitories:
3. Laundry Usage
All dormitory students are given two opportunities to do their laundry every week, based on a set schedule. Washing machines and dryers are provided for, however detergent should be purchased individually and stored in personal space.
4. Health Management
In order to ensure the safety and health of all students, a school nurse is always present on campus to supervise any medical matters and distribute any prescription medicine provided prior by the parents. All prescription medication has their contents recorded on a school database and that information is shared with all local health centers associated with GVCS. In case of any major medical emergency, we provide transportation to the local Chambersburg Hospital Emergency Room.
All costs incurred by medical treatment at any out-of-campus facilities must be paid for by parents as the school does not cover any medical expenses outside of its grounds.
5. Personal Snacks
For the sake of cleanliness, students are not permitted to utilize the stove in the kitchen space during regular weekdays. This is to maximize cleanliness in the dormitories and to minimize the risk of fire incidents caused by cooking. Students may only use the stove in the kitchen space during designated or authorized times.
However, students may consume any personal snacks that do not involve the usage of a stove. To keep dormitory conditions as sanitary as possible, it is strongly recommended that students keep their snacks in their designated storage areas. Exposed food, open containers, or food debris left uncleaned may result in a failed inspection, and may result in demerits, exclusions from school representation, or other consequences of varying severity. On a related note, if unanimously requested by the Parent Association, GVCS offers staff volunteers that may purchase and prepare snacks on behalf of the parents for all students twice or three times a week.
6. Dormitory Special Education
As many different cultures, languages, and personalities exist in the dormitories, special training is held every week to help students embrace one another’s cultures, languages, and personalities for better community living. These training courses are divided into four groups based on gender and grade with a total of 17 different subject-specific sessions.
