Boarding at Sandroyd

Boarding is at the very heart of a Sandroyd education and we currently offer full boarding, weekly boarding, flexi boarding, as well as day places.

We continue to invest in our boarding provision to maintain our position as the largest boarding community across all independent prep schools in the southwest. Central to this are our amazing boarding houseparents, tutors, and matrons.

We have four houses across the school, meaning pupils are split by gender and age. We encourage all children to board in Years 7 and 8, but this is not a requirement, and there is no expectation that current day pupils will have to convert to boarding.

Alaska House (Senior Girls')
Alaska House is for girls in Years 7 and 8.

The Year 8s are given more freedom, with a later ‘upstairs’ time, as well as their own kitchen area, and a Common Room with a television, DVD player, board games, and reading books.

The rules in the Senior Wing are adapted to reflect the age group of the children, and to ensure they are absolutely ready for boarding at their senior schools.

We have a fantastic array of support staff who work with us in Alaska House, including our matrons, our Gap Students and the academic staff who are on duty in the evening.

Atlas House (Middle Boys')
The Middle Boys House is for Year 6 and 7 boys and is located in the main school building.

Every evening the boys can relax in their dormitories, play card games, board games, Playstation, pool, table tennis, watch television or enjoy some quiet time reading and socialising in our communal areas.

We have an excellent network of matrons and support staff who all help in making the middle boys boarding a fun and friendly environment for all.

Himalayas House (Senior Boys')
The Senior Boys' Boarding House is for boys in Year 8.

During their final year, the boys are given more freedom, with a later ‘upstairs’ than the younger children, and a kitchen area to prepare their own snacks in the evenings. The rules are adapted to reflect the age group of the children and indeed to ensure they are absolutely ready for boarding at their Senior Schools.

We have a fantastic array of support staff who work in the house, including our matrons, our Gap Students, and a selection of academic staff who do evening duties.

Rockies House (Junior Boys & Girls)
The Junior Boarding House is for boys in Years 3 – 5 and girls in Years 3 – 6.

The girls and boys are separated by a landing but share the common room and communal areas.

We want the children to treat the boarding house as their home and so the activities and resources within the house are very much based around what the children want. This could be playing a board game, watching a family film whilst munching popcorn, playing ‘hide and seek’ or listening to one of our members of staff read a quiet story.

We have a wonderful support network of staff within the house which includes a number of Sandroyd Prep and Pre-Prep staff, our matron team, and the Gap Students.
