Job Summary

The primary purpose of these position is to engage, as a lecturer or senior lecturer, in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, student supervision, and further development of the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as performing scholarship, administrative and other activities associated with the School. As teaching-focused members of staff, the holders of the positions will contribute to teaching and learning leadership in the school and will undertake work in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). The holders of the positions may be able to pursue research in an area aligned with the school’s disciplines.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Teaching and Learning

  • Make original contributions to teaching which expand knowledge or practice in the relevant discipline.
  • Coordinate courses, prepare and deliver learning activities, and undertake assessment and marking for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Lead the development of new programs and/or courses in the area of focus, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders, ensuring courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.
  • Participate in educational practice and innovative curriculum design including online learning and alternative teaching methods.
  • Maintain and improve the quality of courses as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.
  • Understand and apply university rules relevant to teaching and learning practice.
  • Supervise final year projects and research higher degree students.
  • Provide high quality service to students, including academic counselling and advice.
  • Provide support to other academic positions as needed and during absences.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning / Research

  • Conduct research related to teaching in a discipline relevant in the school.
  • Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development of joint research/SoTL projects
  • Prepare research publications and progress reports and participate in regular meetings to discuss project objectives, methodology and outcomes.

Service and Engagement

  • Foster relations with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.
  • Contribute to the processes that enable the academic team to manage the work, including participation in decision-making and serving on relevant committees.
  • Perform a range of administrative functions and higher level internal duties and provide strong contribution to activities relevant to the School, faculty and the external community, including industry.
  • Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor

  • Requirements of the Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or Institute/School
  • The adoption of sustainable practices in all work activities and compliance with associated legislation and related University sustainability responsibilities and procedures
  • Requirements of the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000, the National Code 2007 and associated legislation, and related responsibilities and procedures developed by the University

Organisational Relationships
The position reports to the Deputy Head of School (Teaching and Learning).

Selection Criteria

For Appointment at Level B

Essential

  • PhD in Interaction Design, Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering,
  • Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated ability for curriculum design, coordination and teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate classes in a variety of settings, which may include small and large groups, studio-based teaching and/or individual project supervision.
  • Evidence of high quality teaching and a demonstrated ability to relate well to students.
  • Evidence of effectiveness in online and/or blended educational practices
  • Track record of supervision of Honours student projects or equivalent to successful completion.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in a discipline area relevant to the school.
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and consultative skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from a multidisciplinary background.

Desirable

  • Evidence of an emerging program of SoTL research and publications.
  • Emerging record of supervision of higher degree by research students
  • Demonstrated involvement in University external engagement activities

For Appointment at Level C

Essential

  • PhD in an area relevant to the school; or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated ability for curriculum design, coordination and teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate classes in a variety of settings, which may include small and large groups, studio-based teaching and individual project supervision.
  • Evidence of high quality teaching and a demonstrated ability to relate well to students.
  • Evidence of effectiveness in online and/or blended educational practices
  • Track record of supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students to successful completion.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge in a discipline area relevant to the schoolwith national recognition of their achievements.
  • Well-developed communication, interpersonal and consultative skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from a multidisciplinary background.
  • Evidence of a well-developed SoTL research program and high quality SoTL publications
  • Experience in writing competitive research grant applications
  • Demonstrated involvement in University external engagement activities

Desirable

Demonstrated leadership and service to domestic or international academic or professional bodies.

Seminar
Applicants invited for interview may be expected to present a seminar in conjunction with the selection interview process. This may include a sample teaching activity.

Qualification Verification
An appointment to this position is subject to the verification of the highest academic qualification from the conferring institution.
