Lewis Girls' is an 11-18 comprehensive school and currently has over 720 pupils. The staff is well established and committed to the achievement of high standards and to the provision of a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Staff development has a high profile and the school is continually improving.

The school has an impressive record of success in academic, sporting, musical, cultural, charitable, enterprise and social activities extending over many years. The school is well disciplined, but friendly, and the quality of staff-pupil relationships is excellent. All pupils are encouraged to give of their best and expectations are high.

The school is situated in Ystrad Mynach but its pupils come from a catchment area of approximately 40 square miles. Close links exist between Lewis Girls', Lewis School Pengam and our feeder primary schools. In addition, a significant number of pupils attend the school from out of the catchment area as a result of parents exercising their right of choice of school.

We have strong links with our three neighbouring schools (Heolddu, Lewis Pengam and Rhymney) and Coleg Y Cymoedd. These links enable a reciprocal broadening of subject choices for all 6th Form students in the four schools. Many students travel to and from our school accessing a wide range of subjects within the Consortium.

The school is maintained by Caerphilly County Borough Council. The Governing Body of the school numbers twenty and includes representatives of the L.A., parents, teaching staff, business and the local community.

The sole purpose of Lewis Girls’ school is to ensure teaching is to the best possible standard so that pupils can engage with the 4 core purposes of learning to become:

  • Ambitious, capable learner.
  • Healthy, confident individuals.
  • Ethically informed citizens.
  • Enterprising, creative contributors.

Lewis Girls’ School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

The school has a very strong pastoral system based on Heads of Achievement leading support teams, including form tutors. The aim is to guide and support students in their learning and provide advice and support for emotional problems and to ensure that progress, care and discipline is maintained. We pride ourselves on the care given to students, encouraging them to share their problems and seek support from staff if they need help.

A key role is that of the form tutor. They regularly link with parents to provide an immediate point of contact. The form tutors work with Heads of Achievement (H.O.A.) assigned to each Key Stage. These staff are supported by Assistant Heads of Achievement, progress managers and learning mentors to oversee the wellbeing of all pupils within the school.

Parents are encouraged to contact school if they have concerns regarding either academic progress or personal issues. These will be followed up and support provided to the pupil to help overcome any difficulties.
